How to plan during “free time”

Our itinerary for the “Europe in 14 days” tour says we are “set free” on day two in the afternoon. What time is this usually at? How do I know when to schedule a Colosseum tour?

The absolute best and definite answer comes from the Rick Steves office. They get this question all the time, and can tell you exactly what time you'll be "set free" on a specific day. Just email the office.

Here is some additional information from RS about timing of visiting/booking tickets for your tour:

When to visit

Here are the best days and times to visit either or both sites based on your tour itinerary:

  • Pre-tour if you're arriving early
  • Day 1 before noon (allowing you time to get to the Welcome Meeting at 3 p.m.)
  • Day 2 at 1 p.m. or later

We are trying to schedule a colosseum tour of the underground areas and there is no availability at all. Is this because of it being during the jubilee?

Colosseum tickets go on sale 720 hours (30 days exactly) in advance, but underground tickets sell out basically immediately.
