14 Day Italy Trip/Itinerary Questions

Hi, My husband and I will be going on a 14 day trip out of Miami, and I wanted to know if this looks like a good schedule, and if anyone has any tips or advice. I have been to Italy once before, but I have not been to the Almafi Coast or Venice. I was going to Florence, but I have been there before, and decided I wanted to see Venice. I looked into flying directly into Venice and working my way down, but there were not direct flights and the travel time would be longer than just taking the fast train to Rome. Thank you!

Day 1-Fly Direct from Miami to Rome/ Get into Rome in the afternoon
Day 2 & 3-Rome
Day 4-Fast train to Venice
Day 5-Vencie
Day 6 & 7-Sienna/Tuscany
Day 8-10-Sorrento/Positano
Day 11 &12-Capri
Day 13- Travel back to Rome
Day 14-Fly Direct Rome to Miami

Have you considered substituting Cinque Terre for the Amalfi Coast. It's easier to get to from Venice, as Sorrento/Postiano and Capri are something like 200 miles south of Rome and completely out of your way.
Then it's easy to get back to Tuscany--easiest by taking day trips out of Florence. Sienna is a one hour bus ride south of Florence, and the bus drops you in the center city. You could also rent a car and see numerous cities in Tuscany efficiently. Many return their rental cars in the fabulous hilltown of Orvieto and take 70 minute local train into Rome Termini.

Hi, Thank you so much for your reply. I know the trip isn't ideal in terms of distance, but I absolutely love Capri, and I have always wanted to go to the Almafi Coast. I am trying to do everything in one trip which isn't the easiest I know.

When you get to the Amalfi Coast, be sure to go to Sal de Riso's pastry shop in Minori. Also make time for a bus ride up to Ravello from Amalfi, spectacular views from the villas that are open to the public, and if you are there on a Saturday, you will see s stream of wedding parties outside the duomo.

One idea would be to head directly to Venice and then group all of your days in Rome at the end. That would reduce the number of hotel stays. It would give you a late arrival in Venice that first night. Might depend on your flight schedule whether that would work well.

I would spend "Night 1" in Rome and go to Venice the next day, and drop Siena/Tuscany in favor of more time in Venice and Rome. Save your time in Rome for the end of the trip.

With those destinations, you should have a great trip no matter what.

I would consolidate Sorrento and Capri.
Venice is best with a 3rd night.

Rome (3)
Venice (3)
Siena (2)
Sorrento (4) - for Capri and Positano
Rome (1)

Take the train directly to Venice upon landing. It will be a long day but will cut out a change of hotel and will group all of your Rome time at the end of your trip.

You have 12 full days. You're trying to visit 4 major areas in that amount of time. It's really not an ideal situation with all the travel that's involved. I would suggest skipping the Tuscany part for this trip and adding that time to Rome and Venice. This will give you a better pace.

Did you try to fly into Rome and out of either Venice or Naples. If not, you might want to look into that.

As soon as you land, head to Venice. Save Rome until the end of your trip, it will give you a half day os sight seeing by not having to move hotels. See if you can fly out of a different city. Two years ago, we flew out of Venice through Madrid to Miami. The Venice departure was super early. I would land in Venice and depart from Rome. You may think you are saving time and or money, but by the time you factor in the time to backtrack, a half day to change hotels, and the high speed train fare, it evens out. Sure the round trip from Rome may be cheaper, but add a high speed train fare to it and balances out. Or you could land in Milan and take the train to Venice from there. Milan tends to have cheap fares.
