14 day Italy Itinerary. Thoughts and recommendations please.

Hi everyone, what do you think of the below itinerary?

  • Fly to Pisa. 3 nights in Lucca with day trip trip to Cinque Terre

5 nights in Florence including day trip to Siena and 1 wine region tour.

2 nights in Bologna

3 nights staying at Varenna in lake Como

1 night in Milan as flying home from Malpenza.

Does this seem okay? We wanted to stay longer in Siena but really wanted to do Cinque Terre too so thought we would just opt for day trip to Siena as its easy to get there from Florence on the bus. Also what do people think of Lucca as a place?

Many thanks.

I would take one day from Lake Como and reduce Florence by one day and stay in Siena 2 nights. You could begin the wine tour from Siena.

What are you planning to do in Bologna? Depending on your answer, we might give you options for a different town in that area.

Hi , I wanted to avoid 2 nighters where possible just because its going to be so hot and I want to minimise moving around with luggage. Also wanted 3 nights in Como so we could relax properly at the end of the trip. We will still go to Siena for the daay and probably do a wine tour in that area. So hard to fit everything in! In terms of Bologna, my girlfriend seems really keen on seeing it. Meant to be amazing for food but we might use the 2nd day to do a day trip to Ravenna/Ferrara/Rimini.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Bologna has a large, atmospheric medieval district and great food. I think it's a great base city. I haven't been to Ferrara (which many people here have liked) or Rimini, but Ravenna is gorgeous, and the mosaics are incredible. It's a wonderful day-trip from Bologna. (If you had more time, an overnight would be fine.)

Don't add any more stops to your trip. Two nights in a location means a single full day there when you take travel into account.

Your three nights in Lucca gives you only two full days. Using one of them to go to the CT means you won't have much time in Lucca. You might want to consider just going to the CT when you land and visiting Lucca on your way to Florence.
