We will be visiting the Lakes for our honeymoon next month and during our stay in Stresa we would like to take a day to travel the Lago Maggiore Express. I have two questions: Can you purchase tickets in advance (do you need to?) and if so from where? And secondly, for anyone who has done the trip, is it worth spending the hour in Domodossola (cutting the time in Locarno short by an hour), or would we rather see Locarno?

That package, described at http://www.lagomaggioreexpress.com/Inglese/benvenuti.html, offers tickets valid over one day or two days, and it seems that reservations are not included or necessary. There never is any deadline to buy a ticket and the Centovalli railway does not require a reservation on its own. There may be several places in Stresa where you can buy the ticket, including the train station and the boat dock.
