Stay in Cefalu or close to Palermo Airport

We planed to stay in Cefalu on Monday 9/15, leave the city around 7-8 am on Tuesday 9/16, and drive to Palermo airport to return rental car first, then catch a Lufthansa flight out (11:55 AM).

Google maps said it only takes about 1 hour from Cefalu to airport, but i don't know how bad the traffic will be on a Tuesday morning.
Anyone have done it before?

Or is it better to get to Palermo airport on Monday 9/15, return the rental car, and stay close to the airport, fly out next day?

A couple of years ago, I drove a similar distance in the morning from San Sebastian to Bilbao to return a rental car and board a flight to London. It was a bit stressful, especially remembering to pull off and fill up the gas shortly before arriving to the airport, and since I had been in a long traffic jam another day on the same road. But I'd feel fairly comfortable to depart at 7:00, allowing 3 hours for the drive, 1 hour for car-drop issues, and 1 hour to check in for the intra-European flight.

The traffic is heavy on the Tangenziale E90 at peak commute times. Plan to leave 2 hours prior to when you want to be at the airport. You will need at least 1.5 hours drive plus the time to return your vehicle.
If you want to stay closer, the resort town of Mondello is very nice and much closer to the airport. From there you can be at the airport in less than 30 min and in the morning you will be driving against the commute traffic.
