Discover Card=Diners Club-OK

I have noticed that Discover Card claims that if a hotel lists that they accept Diners Club Inetrnational that I can use my Discover Card to pay the bill.

My BnB in Italy is listed as taking Diners Club International on Booking.com but they do not list it on their own site. I know I could contact the BnB and ask them but I feel like I have already asked them so many questions. Plus, I am afraid if I ask they will say that they do not accept the card. If I booked through booking.com and if they showed Diners Club as being accepted, shouldn't the BnB honor that?

Additionally...has anyone used Discover at a restaurant that said they accept Diners Club?

I am posting this is Switzerland forum also because I am traveling to there as well. Thank you!

You will find a very very small number of places in Europe that will have ever heard of Discover Card let alone accept it.

Unless you communicate directly with the place and they agree I'd count on them NOT accepting it. Bring another card.

Most places have never heard of Diners Club either.

lisa,

I also agree with Nigel and Michael. You'll probably find that Diner's Club and Discover cards are accepted at very few establishments (especially smaller B&B's, hotels or restaurants). Only the big chains such as Hilton, Sheraton, etc. seem to take that type of credit cards.

With firms that do take credit cards, Visa and MasterCard seem to be most commonly accepted. If you only have Diner's and Discover, you'll probably end up doing a lot of business with cash.

The only valid answer will come from your B&B. It seems that more places accept Discover now than last year, but just because there's a Diner's Club logo doesn't mean it will work all the time (voice of experience).

Thank you all. My friend who travels a lot also gave me bad news yesterday. She said Mastercard is not widely accepted. She said she has only been able to use her Visa. All I have are Mastercards. My Visas are all attached to my bank account or my AAA travel card which is all cash. That means if I see something and want to charge it I may have problems.

As for Discover...I did call them and they told me they would contact my hotels and ask them about Diners Club/Discover. They agreed that it is deceiving for a hotel or B nB to advertise that they take Diners Club and then refuse a guest with Discover. Discover charges no foreign transaction fee that is why I prefer to use it. It is also my lowest interest card. So...at the very least maybe I will save others from this deception in that they may have to take those Diners Club images off those websites.

At the risk of being beaten up for being negative while giving accurate facts - with the greatest of respect, your friend is WRONG. Mastercard (known on older European stickers as Eurocard) and Visa are the two default credit/debit cards accepted throughout Europe. They are at the businesses I am associated with/run. They are effectively completely interchangeable. I travel all over western and central Europe frequently, and Italy at least once, usually 2 or 3 times a year.

I can assure you that in virtually all places that take credit/debit cards in Italy they will accept both Mastercard and Visa. Some small number of them, usually big American chain hotels will or very expensive restaurants, will also take American Express. A miniscule number - none that I have ever seen personally - of the top American ones - will perhaps accept Diners Club. I have never heard of and never seen any European business which advertises accepting Discover.

When I lived in the USA I had a Discover Card which I used in Sears and other places. When I returned here I put it in a drawer and have never used it since as it is worthless here.

It may not be what you want to hear, but it is nevertheless true and not negative.

You will be much happier using your Mastercard in Italy than either the Discover or American Express.

Regardless of what the agreements and policies are at the corporate and business level, when it comes down to that grumpy clerk at the front desk, or that teenage cashier at the cafe, if they don't want to take a card they never heard of, they won't. I've seen AM EX turned down in places where their logo is on the window. By all means, try it and report back.

Perhaps your friend was discouraged by the "Euro/MasterCard" logo; MasterCard is accepted anywhere credit cards are accepted.

My friend is a former bank manager and told me that her Mastercard would not go through at a lot of places but that her Visa did. She has perfect credit and carries no balances. I am very envious...LOL!

She said something about Visa being harder to get and it being more prestigious. She told me she had all of her Mastercards converted to Visas. I tried to get that done with my cards and only one agreed to convert to a Visa (and I may not have it in time for my trip). So...there must be some truth in what she said but maybe I did not understand her well.

As for acceptance...I was planning to use the Discover and Amex at hotels, hotel bars, airport stores and airport restaurants. All of the places I am staying are small Inns and they list that they take Amex or Diners Club or both when you view their listings on the booking sites. Only one of the places lists cards taken on their website and it matches what I see on the booking sites. So, I was thinking if I can use Discover (as Diners Club) for these places I would avoid the foreign transaction fee and if I can use Amex I can rack up points to use for my next trip :-).

I will definitely report back and might even make a list of all places where Discover or Amex was accepted where I went with the hope of helping others. BTW...nothing against Mastercard or Visa but all those cards for me are super-high interest.

I would trust an establishments own website for the most valid information, as opposed to a booking site.

I'm curious how you will handle this if A) your friend is right and most places won't take MasterCard (although the very experienced travelers here have assured you that most will), and B) they will also not accept your Discover card/Diners Club. How will you pay for things then?

Note that you can argue all you like with a hotel that a booking site indicated they will take a certain type of payment, but I highly doubt you can force them to.

Booking.com said they will stand by their postings of what a hotel will accept. So...I will report back and let you all know what happens. So far the hotel I am staying at in Lugano Switzerland said they absolutely take Diners Club but they did not specifically say "We take Discover." But Discover bought out Diners Club and Discover told me that it should work. So...we'll see.

The bottom line is this...these things are worth investigating. If some people reading this thread are lucky enough to have low interest Visa/Mastercards...God Bless you and count your lucky stars. Not all of us are in that situation due to certain life situations that were beyond our control. All my cards are super high interest so Discover and Amex are my preferred payment methods.

lisaew, I hope you have a wonderful trip to Italy and Switzerland, and success with using your Discover Card. I myself have traveled throughout Italy on two 1-month trips with the past nine months, and I do not remember ever seeing Diners or Discover signage, but I was not looking for that since I was carrying just VISA credit and debit cards. I did find a variety of places, including at least one inn, that did not accept any credit cards at all. I hope you will have a good debit card or two with you, with a balance to draw on, so you can easily get cash when you need to. Everybody still takes cash, as far as I know!
I cannot resist sharing my only travel-related Diners Club story, from many years ago. I had finished up 3+ years in the Peace Corps in Brazil, and was slowly making my way back to the States, including chugging my way up the Amazon. On the boat from Belem to Manaus (site of the US-Portugal World Cup game I am watching as I write this, just finished with an exciting 2-2 tie!) I met this young guy from Luxembourg and we decided to travel upriver to Colombia together. Nice guy, but he spoke no language that was of any use in the region, and we communicated by way of my very weak high school French. We ended up stuck for nine days in the little riverside town of Tefe, as we missed a boat going upriver. Let me assure you all that missing a boat on the Amazon was a much bigger deal than missing a train in Italy, at least it was back then. Someone in Tefe let us put our hammocks up on his roof, and that became our home. While stuck in Tefe, we were befriended by these two Dutch agronomists who were working there, lucky for my friend who could communicate with them in German. One afternoon the four of us ended up in this middle-of-nowhere bar, drinking many beers and nibbling on whatever. I was quite surprised that the walls of this bar were covered with many, many Diners Club decals, so many that they served almost like wallpaper. After an afternoon of beers left the table covered with empty bottles, and all our speech in whatever language was considerably slurred, one of the Dutch guys offered to pay for our outing, good since only they had any income, beers were quite expensive that far upriver, and we were holding on to our few Brazilian Cruzeiros for dear life, as there was no place within hundreds of kilometers where we could cash a Travelers Check (remember those?), probably including whatever boat that might finally come along. So this Dutch agronomist took out his Diners Club card to pay the bill. The bar owner took it into his hand, turned it over, and said only: "what is this?" He had no idea what a credit card was, let alone a Diners Club card, and of course just took Brazilian cash at his bar. Fortunately our friend also had cash to pay, so we could stagger our way back to town. I don't know how the barkeeper had come into this very large supply of decals, but evidently he just liked the colors and used them to decorate his establishment. Thanks for listening! Hope you have better luck, Lisaew!

Larry...wow! What a great story! I admire you and thank you for your service work in the Peace Corps. I think that what I have learned from this is that before I sit down and eat/drink anywhere that I will show the restaurant my card and ask them if they accept it. So...good lesson from Larry, here. I seem to remember doing this the last time I was overseas. I asked about my card ahead of time and had to wander a lot to find a place that would accept whatever I wanted to use.

I did find out that the logos on booking.com were wrong for a couple of my Italy hotels. So, I canceled one of them and made a new, more expensive reservation at a Holiday Inn that definitely takes Discover. But I did the math and because I am saving so much on interest and other fees, the added expense equals out.

I kept the other reservation but will use Discover to get a cash advance and put that on my AAA Visa travelers card to pay for that hotel.
