13 nights for a family in Italy in December - do I need to book accommodation in advance?

Hi,
We are a family of 5 (three kids aged 8, 12 and 15) about to leave on a 9 week trip to Europe which includes 13 nights in Italy in early December. We have booked a car for this time as well as accommodation for our final two nights in Venice (before we leave for Salzburg).

I have not booked any other accommodation for this time as we are not yet sure of our itinerary and how long we want to spend in each place. We normally travel in Asia and make decisions as we go along...this is a different experience for us!

Do you think we need to book ahead or just find places as we go?

Thanks so much for your advice!

If you normally use at least two rooms, then I don't think you will have any real problem. However, if trying for one room for everyone then you really do need to book in advance. Not all hotels/B&Bs,etc. have family room to handle 5. You should identify three to five hotels that might work where you are going and call ahead a couple of days before.

If you will be in Roma at all, book now. December 8th celebrates the Immaculate Conception, kicks off the Christmas season, and is that start of Papa Francesco's Jubilee. It will be busier than usual!

With 5 people, apartments will serve you well, especially if you will land somewhere for 3 or more nights. As Frank said, for other locations, you should try to secure something at least a couple of days in advance.

I love Venezia in winter. Hope you do too!

Dear Laurel and Frank,
Thank you for your advice!
I've started looking at apartments at other possible destinations.
Thanks again.
