13 night Sicily Itinerary

Hello everyone!
Would love any feedback on my itinerary Sicily Late April-early May

13 nights

  1. Fly in/out of Palermo;
  2. 3 nights Palermo;
  3. Pickup a rental car, See Monreale and Turkish steps then arrive at Greek temple in afternoon
  4. 1 night Agrigento;
  5. 3 nights in Ortigia
  6. 3 nights Taormina (1 day to visit Etna). (We spent a lovely day in Taormina many years ago when we were on a cruise);
  7. 3 nights in Cefalu - to relax on the beach;
  8. Drive back to Palermo airport and fly out.

We are an active couple in our mid-fifites.
Normally I like to keep a 2 week European holiday to just 2-3 hotels as I dislike packing and unpacking - but just can’t do it in Sicily - there's too much to see!

We will be mostly sightseeing and eating (and drinking)

I’m thinking that 3 nights in Taormina is one too many - and thinking of increasing 1 extra night in either Agrigento, Ortigia or Cefalu.
I'm leaning towards a second night in Agrigento as it will give us time to see either Scala dei Turchi and/or Villa Romana del Casale.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thank you!

I think you are woefully short days in Palermo. Great restaurants and sightseeing. We didn't expect to like it, and ended up LOVING it. IMO, you don't need more time in Cefalu. We spent two nights. We did really enjoy our time there. Its been a few years since we were in Sicily, but the Scala dei Turchi was closed. The Villa Romana is a must see! I did think 3 nights in Taormina was too much. If you are interested in the Etna area, be sure to spend some time in Randazzo.

I did not think the beach at Cefalu was that great. We saw Cefalu as a day trip from Palermo. We saw the sites in a day although we did not relax on the beach. But it was quite rocky and was not that appealing. I would move one day from Cefalu to Palermo.

We spent three nights in Taormina and thought it was just right. We spent one day seeing Taormina and a second on a private tour of Mt Etna area. We spent four nights in Ortigia and really found that one day too much unless you were planning on a day trip.

Villa Romana del Casale is not an easy day trip from Agrigento. I would not do that. We stopped on our way from Ragusa to Agrigento and that worked out fine. You could stop on way to Siracusa.

I don’t know why you would try to go to Monreale after getting a car. I would take the bus.
