A private tour guide recommended in RS Rome book prefers to be paid in advance using Western Union. Is this a common practice?

Not as far as I know. If it is in the R.S. book, there is some legitimacy, but I have found the private guides usually accept an appointment on faith and you pay them in cash at the end of the tour. A few are starting to ask for credit card advance payment, and I've seen PayPal used, but not W.U. Seems kind of retro....

Western Union payments are untraceable.
