We would like to rent a car in Lucca (very possible) and drop it off in either Assisi or Cortona or somewhere near. Any advice?

How are you going to leave after you drop the car off? I'd pick a town that is on a rail line to your next destination. Also, while you can usually drop a car off on Sundays, I'm more comfortable dropping off when the rental agency is open.

We are looking at both Rail and Bus possibilities which is why Lucca , Assisi or Deruta would be ideal.
I found Perugia and Arezzo on AutoEurope's site but not sure of connections back to Cortona. Need to know who has had experience dropping off a car in a town in that area. We are renting the day beofre Labor Day (May 1) and planning to drop poff on either Saturday or Monday because we agree with your comments on dropping off when the office is closed. Thanks.
