12 Days itineray- Rome-Sorrento and Barcelona

Hi, Trying to figure out how to allocate the time for our June trip for Rome-Sorrento and Barcelona. We plan to do open Jaw. We'll be flying to Rome. Hopefully , arriving by early afternoon and at the end of the trip flying out from Barcelona back to California. Rome- Vatican, St peter's Basilica, Coliseum, Forum, Fountain of Trevi, Travestere and maybe a day trip to Ovierto? ( not sure of spelling) Sorrento - Day trip to Capri, Pompeii and Amalfi Barcelona - Familia de Grada etc ( sorry haven't read up on Barcelona yet but have heared good comments from friends who has been there)
Thanks a lot for any feedbacks.

You're trying to cram a lot of cities and sites into just a few days. For Rome you'll need at least 4 days if you wish to see everything you list including a day trip to Orvieto. Same for Sorrento, 4 days. This doesn't include the travel days between the two cities. If you can add more days it would be better, if not, you may want to cut out a day trip or two. Donna

You don't mention if you've been to Italy before. If not I would certainly enjoy it more fully and drop Barcelona. Also are the twelve days excluding flight days because especially after that trip from Calif you'll be able to manage an evening walk and dinner the day you arrive but not much else I'd imagine. I too fly from SFO. The trip to Sorrento is a bit cumbersome. By the time we settled into our hotel it was mid afternoon. The ferry rides to Positano and Capri are so nice. Orvieto is our new favorite and a nice overnighter. I like Spain and Barcelona but if you can save it you'll have another great vacation as it has many more special cities than just Barcelona. If you see it on the same trip I would give Barcelona three full days max. Rome just has so much more to offer but it can be exhausting-like NYC. Sort of depends on the pace you like to set.

Thanks for your reply. It'll be 12 days not including the flight days. There will be 4 of us and 2 of us have been to Rome already. We did it thru a travel agent and it was not as good. We would love to go back to Vatican and have more time there. I know that it'll be quite rush but we plan to just do Barcelona in Spain before heading back to San Francisco.
