Hello! We are leaving Rome on Sunday, June 8th, and going to an Agriturismo near Seina. We will spend four days there and then to Florence for a couple days. We are planning on renting a car - question is - where?! I was thinking Rome, then driving but perhaps too complicated and might get "hit" by the ZLT(?) fines. So, then, maybe train to Florence and pick up there and then return when we go to Florence? In Florence we would have to pick up at the airport because it is Sunday and that is the only one open. Thoughts and suggestions are so appreciated! My husband and I will be traveling with our two boys, ages 10 and 12 so wanting to make this as stress free and easy as possible! Thanks in advance.
Personally I would pick up in Rome and drop at Florence airport. Bring a good GPS.
We did exactly what you are doing. We took the train to Orvieto, took care of the rental car paperwork, stored our bags in the car and left it in front of the rental office. We went up into the old town area of Orvieto for about 4 hours or so. I wish we had more time there. We then drove to our Agriturismo outside of Siena. When we were done with our time there we dropped the car at the airport in Florence. They have an express bus from the airport in to town. It drops you off at the train station. We were able to walk to our Florence hotel from there.
Julie, Andrea's suggestion is good to take the train to Orvieto, store your luggage in the rental company's office, sightsee around Orvieto for a few hours (it's a great town) & then drive to Siena. Alternatively, if you're in more of a hurry to get to Siena, you can take the train to Siena and rent your car there. I personally would not rent the car in Rome because it would stress me to drive through the city. I would also return your car in Siena and then take the train to Florence. I'm not sure if the rental agencies in Orvieto or Siena are open on Sunday but you could always take the train from Rome to Siena and sightsee for the remainder of Sunday in Siena and then rent your car the next morning on Monday. Just some suggestions. Have a great trip & remember to take a good GPS with you.
