Rail service

If we have rail passes in Italy, do you need to purchase a ticket on Leonardo Express FCO to Rome Termini?

James, it depends. I believe that the Leonardo Express train may require a 1st class pass. The fare is 14Euro which is the 1st class fare. No 2nd class fare on this particular train.

If you don't already have the rail passes, don't get them. They cost you more than getting individual tickets, sometimes a lot more. And they don't save you much as far as convenience since you still have to make reservations if you have a pass.

James, The Railpass should be fine for the Leonardo Express, but of course if you're just arriving from the U.S. you'll have to get your Pass validated before using it. If you try to use an unvalidated Pass, you'll be nicked with expensive fines on the spot! I'm not sure what type of Pass you're using, but it's a bit of a waste to use one day of your Railpass for a 32 minute trip in from the airport. One other point to note is that Railpasses DO NOT include the reservation fees that are compulsory on the "premium" trains such as the Freccia high speed trains. You'll have to buy the reservations separately. DON'T get caught without a valid reservation for the train you're riding on or again, you'll face a hefty fine which will be collected on the spot! Finally, Railpasses are NOT accepted by the Italo trains and a few others such as the Circumvesuviana. A Railpass is usually not the most cost effective option for rail travel in Italy. Happy travels!
