11 Day Honeymoon In Italy

Hi All,

I just booked a trip to Italy in October for my honeymoon. We will be there for 11 full days and are trying to figure out what to do. We fly into Rome and out of Milan (we found an incredible deal on first class tickets to do it this way). My fiance and I have both spent more than enough time in Rome, so we are thinking of leaving Rome as soon as we fly in. We both want to see Florence and Venice. Any tips on an itinerary? One thing I am debating is whether we should stay in Florence and do day trips around Tuscany or if we should stay in Florence for 2-3 days, then stay in Chianti for 2-3 days. Of course, if we stay in Chianti, I am guessing we will need to rent a car.

I am thinking we will go from Tuscany to Venice. I'm thinking of spending 2 days in Venice. Since we are leaving out of Milan, is it worth going to Lake Como? Or do we just go directly to Milan and spend a day there before flying out?

Any thoughts/tips would be appreciated!

Varenna on Lake Como is a beautiful place for a honeymoon. I don't think you could go wrong with Venice and Varenna.

We did 14 days last summer (Venice--Florence--Rome--Pompeii--Milan).

At the end of the trip, we flew out of Milan also. We had spent so much time in museums, cathedrals, etc. that we decided to spend our last day on Lake Como. We took the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna.

It was a nice "lazy day," and the lake is so beautiful. We basically took the boat around to the stops, had lunch on the water, a couple gelato's, some shopping. We spent some time drinking coffee by the lake watching the tourists.

Definitely worth going to see and a nice way to remember your last day in Italy.

Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials and also on not trying to see the whole country in 11 days. So do you have 12 nights? You say "11 full days" which implies to me that you are traveling in on day 1, sleeping in Italy 12 nights, then flying out on day 13. If so....

Arrive Rome and transfer immediately by train to Florence (Firenze in Italian). Stay 4 nights and use it as a base to go into the countryside if you are so inclined. You can rent a car for a day or try a tour like Tours by Roberto to make it very easy.

Transfer by train to Venice (Venezia) and stay 4 nights. The city is very romantic and really worth the time. Take a day trip to Verona or Vicenza if you tire of Venice (although I doubt you will). October is my second favorite month in Venice. (December is my favorite.)

Transfer again by train to Varenna for 3-4 nights. Lovely and peaceful Lago di Como. See the beautiful Villa Balbianello during a lake cruise, hike to the castle. I say 3-4 nights because if your flight is late enough (after noon) on day 13, you can make it to the airport in Milan without sleeping in Milan. If you have a morning flight, you will need to go to Milano for one night before flying.

I would spend the last night in Milano, it's a great city and there is plenty to do. Get a hotel near Milano Centrale, take the metro to the Duomo stop; the Duomo, Galleria and La Scala are within two minutes of each other. If you get to Milano early enough, you can walk through the Castello Sforzesco gardens.
