driving route from Calais to Italy via Germany

My husband and I are planning a 3 week driving holiday to Italy. We are taking the Eurotunnel to Calais and would like to travelling through Germany, "nip" through Austria / Switzerland and then travel through Italy to Positano before heading home. Never having travelled this route before I would be very grateful for any suggested routes to take where we can see castles, beautiful scenery etc and also any tips for reasonably price accommodations. Many thanks Val

Using Google Maps enter from Calais to Positano.
Any of the 3 routes suggested by Google will have plenty of scenery and castles. The possibilities however are infinite if you are willing to deviate more from the standard courses. But only you can decide what you want to see along the way based on your personal interests and likes. I suggest reading up on RS' (or any other) Europe Guide.

Luxembourg for cheap fuel and scenery. Don't miss your arrival time at Eurotunnel, which should be easy as it is on your doorstep. Castles area of the Rhine is nice, wine area of the Mosel is nice. Fill the tank before you cross into Italy - fuel is as expensive as England. Get a Vignette (costs CHF 40) before you drive in Switzerland.
Get a Vignette (costs are rising, presently nearly €10 for 10 days) before entering Austria. Failure to purchase and display the Vignette in the relevant country is likely to rapidly attract stiff on-the-spot fines. Much of the best scenery in Switzerland will be above you when you are in the Gotthard Tunnel. I'd suggest you do your Swiss sightseeing before entering the tunnel. Which bit of Austria were you considering? When will you travel?
