We're 2 older experienced travelers who haven't been to Venice in over 10 years. Any suggestions about accommodations for the first of September for 3 nights? Nothing fancy but nice - $$
Hi Barbara, I have two great B&B's to recommend. If you do not mind a shared bathroom, then B&B San Paolo (website is http://www.bedandbreakfastsanpaolo.net/ ) was great, and is located between the Rialto bridge and the Fontemente Nova. Another great one (and very highly rated) is the B&B You and Me (website http://bbyouandme.com/index_en.html ), not too far from the Rialto bridge. All their rooms have private baths. Happy Travels!
I don't know what "$$" translates into in euros or dollars, so no idea of your price range. Did you know that Rick Steves has written some excellent guidebooks with recommendations for lodging in all price ranges for Venice along with descriptions of the various neighborhoods to help you figure out which ones match YOUR interests and budget? You might start there. But definitely stay in Venice proper - not on the mainland (like Mestre) or the Lido. FWIW, we just stayed at Casa Rezzonico and really enjoyed it, if you want to check them out. But I don't know if that's what you're looking for.
Thanks for the replies. We have been using Rick's books exclusively for over 15 years. Sleeping accommodations have always worked out well in over 5 trips. We just thought the Travelers Help line might provide some new information. Rick always says that they can't visit every place and he values the input of others. Keep on posting.
We've had three trips to Venice, all 3 stayed at Al Campaniel B&B, in the San Polo area. Always mid Sept, we stay in the standard double (same room all 3 times!). It has a separate but private, locked bathroom across the hall. No canal views, but I think we paid in the vicinity of 70-80 euro. Other rooms available of course. Clean and quiet. Nice breakfasts (breads/croissants - oh, the peach jam filled croissants...yum/cereal/cheese/coffee/tea/juice). A 30 sec walk from the San Toma vaporetto stop. Chocolate shop across the alley. Marco is a great host...even let us leave our luggage in a locked closet after checkout while we toured the city. http://alcampaniel.tripod.com/id19.html

Check out Hotel Ala in Venice. I've stayed there several years in a row and wouldn't think of going anywhere else (and I've tried 3 of Rick Steves choices). It's a Best Western property but you might get a better rate dealing directly through their web site. The vaparetto stops 50 yards from the hotel entrance ("Giglio" which is one stop before/after "Salute"). 5 minutes walk to the Accademia in one direction, 5 minutes to San Marco in the other. Amazing breakfast and the most pleasant staff.

Hi Barbara,
We stayed at B&B Venezia which is in the Santa Elena section of Venice. It is not in the heart of Venice but is a beautiful 20 minute walk along the water to Piazza San Marco. The rooms are not fancy but clean and have private baths. The owners live in the building and make you feel at home. Enjoy your trip.
Ah, my favorite: B&B Venezia. Glad to see that somebody else has stepped out of the Venice Tourist Box into St Elena to side the Venetians at home. Exactly correct about that wonderful 20 minute walk along the water to San Marco. To me there's nothing better than St. Elena.
You might have a look at Hotel San Salvador. My wife and I spent three nights there earlier this month. Enjoyed it a lot. Nice, independently run, old, clean, comfortable. Around 130 euros. Great location near Rialto Bridge about a quarter of the way to St. Mark's. We stayed in their "annex". Large room (#D) with ensuite bath.
You might have a look at B&B 3C near San Marco. It's rated well on Trip Advisor and their rates are very reasonable for Venice!
We booked a B&B through Airbnb and had a great experience (and you have a private bathroom). It's in the Dorsoduro area, which I found preferable to the San Marcos area that was far more crowded (and it's closer to the main sites than many of the other areas). https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/325925
