Train help

I am just starting my research on train travel options. We want to travel from Venice to Varenna/Lake Como. Then later travel from Varenna to Sorrento/Amalfi coast. How long should these trips take? what are the options? Websites and how to use them? I've looked at the BD BAHN site and I haven't figured it out yet.
Any and all the help is appreciated.

Venice - Varenna: 4+ hours, depending on train option (one change in Milan). Varenna - Sorrento: ~6 hours from Varenna to Naples, depending on train option (at least one change, in Milan). Then from Naples Centrale station you need to take a Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento (70 min.). So you are looking at a minimum 7 hours from Varenna to Sorrento (if all planets align). For the Amalfi Coast add another 45 min of bus from Sorrento. Italy is not small. It's as long as California from north to south. Varenna is in the far north, almost in Switzerland, Sorrento in the south. From Varenna to Sorrento is almost 600 miles, so 7 hours on a train is not bad at all. You couldn't drive that fast with a car.
