10 nights tinerary beginning and ending in Florence in Sepember

We are currently planning to spend two nights in Florence, two nights in Piensa, one night in Siena, three nights in Cinque Terre, one night in Lucca and one night back in Florence. I am beginning to feel that it is too many different hotels. While in Piensa we are planning to take a tour of Montepulciano and two other towns. Before going to Cinque Terre we were going to take a tour of the Chianti region.

In addition to 6 different hotels, are we trying to do too much? We really want to hike the Cinque Terre and experience some great food and wine. We also will be using the bus and train when not on a tour.

Thank you for any feedback

Yes, indeed. I'm exhausted by just reading your itinerary. Avoid one night stays and aim for two and three nights instead. I suggest for you to take a one full day tour to the hill towns of Siena, Chianti, Pisa and St Gimignano, the cost was US$120.00 (five years ago!) from 8:00am-8:00pm and included a guide and lunch with wine in an agroturism farm. You can book this tour one day ahead at any travel agent in Florence. I was impressed by the quality of the tour, the guide's professionalism and the great lunch and Chianti wine, of course!
To really enjoy Florence you need at least three nights. Slow down and enjoy Tuscany to the max:)

with 10 nights, I would do about 3 "home bases" in 10 days, you can definitely do day trips from them, it is very taxing to change hotels, and a waste of very valuable vacation time.....you can easily visit Lucca and Siena from Florence, but many people may chime in with better ways to consolidate....

Yes, as pointed out by the other 2 posts, you're correct: it's too many different hotels.
Bus schedules are limited in the Tuscan country, that's one place where the flexibility of a rental car will enhance your trip. Or take commercial van tours from the cities.
Avoid having a car in Florence.

Thank you for your replies .
Do you think three nights in Florence, three in Piensa and three in Cinque Terre would work and the last night back in Florence making the trip to theairport not a major deal. Is there a better base than Piensa to do a wine tour and visit the surrounding area?

I would give the Lucca night to Siena, instead.

Much better, but could you go directly from your flight to Pienza for the 3 nights, then the CT (3 nights is perfect!) and finally wrap up in Firenze for 4 nights? One less change!

Pienza is a along a beautiful stretch from Montepulciano to Montalcino. Two very different wine regions. The Val D'Orcia has spectacular views as well. Check out the Abbey of Sant'Antimo near Montalcino, and the Abbey Monte Olivieto Maggiore which is about an hour from Montepulciano. The monks at the latter make wine, honey, herb preparations

I agree with Laurel's advice, make the Florence stop your last one. Lucca is an easy daytrip, as is Siena. Siena is also a good base for southern Tuscany.
