10 night May/June trip Advise: transportation to Cinque Terre ?

Need advise on itinerary. Currently we fly into Rome and depart from Florence. My initial thought was Rome>Cinque Terre>Chianti/Florence. The train schedule out of Rome to Cinque Terre looks like there are very few options (4.5 hours train travel) and I don't want to spend half a day waisted on traveling. Would I be better off going to Rome, then Chianti>Cinque Terre and back to Florence? Anyone traveled by train from Rome to Cinque Terre during the month of May? Do they add more trains to Cinque Terre out of Rome during the high season? Or, are the trains listed on the site now all my options?

There are lots of trains to the Cinque Terre, but you have to make connections. If you are only looking at direct trains to Monterosso, then yes, there are only a few IC trains every day, but if you go by way of Florence, there are trains to Florence almost every half hour. From Florence there are trains to La Spezia, most changing trains in Pisa, then the Cinque Terre Express and other trains to the Cinque Terra.

One problem is that if you are looking at trains after December 8, most of the trains to the Cinque Terre are Regionali. They are not showing on the schedule yet for various reasons. The main one is that they are subsidized by regional governments and they are in negotiations now that always go down to the last minute. After December 8, you will see all the trains. Or look at schedules before Dec 8. The schedules don't change much.

Question? This from one of your previous posts:

Our (late May/early June) family trip will include Rome, Tuscany (central and northern),
Florence and Cinque Terre... My adult children have never been to
Italy, so they will be hitting the tourist highlights.

Are these 10 nights on the ground in Italy or are you counting your overnight flight? How many nights are you setting aside for Rome?

'Fraid any way you shake it, transport between Rome and the CT is going to eat 1/2 a day. I'm also curious where you're going to in the Chianti region and how you're getting there?

We will have 10 nights on the ground. Rome - two nights - just want to go a couple of sites here, since we've been there. Plan on Staying in Monterosso and day hike. We want to train as much as possible and avoid renting a car, since there will be 6 in our group. Looking into hiring driver and day tours for the few days in Chianti. Just need to figure out transportation from Firenze train station to location outside of Florence in or near Chianti region.

Good information on the train schedules. Oh Italy> got to love their Italian time. We were there once for a transportation strike on the day of our departure.

The government, of course, wants Trenitalia to run more trains and reduce the subsidy. Trenitalia, of course, wants to run fewer trains and get paid more money. So they go right up to the Dec 8 deadline, and end up with everything about the same as before.

So the next time you take an Italian Regionale, say thank you to the tax payers of Italy.

Yep, schedules don't change much nor do I expect they'll add trains so what you see now is pretty much what you'll have to work with. The trains in the CT will be really busy/crowded in late May/June.
