Thinking about relaxing for 10 days in Venice... Can we stay entertained for that long?
Most people allot only 2 or 3 days, then wish they had a week. You'll get to explore Venice much more deeply than the average visitor. If you get bored, you can also do day trips to Vicenza or Padua. Maybe even take the ferry over to Rovinj.
10 days is a long time in Venice, but I think I could really learn to relax and enjoy and do easy strolls all over the place if I had 10 days.
I've spent 9 nights there over 4 trips (!) since 2008 and haven't tired of it yet (hoping some year to do my bucket list Carnival trip with another 5 nights). And there are still so many areas I'd love to explore. You can kill a whole day doing Murano/Burano/Torcello. If worse comes to worst, you could take a day trip or two...Padua, some people will daytrip to Verona - but with 10 days - you can see everything!
Ten days in Venice is a dream of mine, enjoy it slowly, as it was meant to be enjoyed. You can fill some of the time with daytrips, as mentioned, or take a class in cooking, attend concerts, really live a somewhat local experience.
Ten days in Venice will be great!! You will not be rushed (or bored) and can do all sorts of day trips that are just a short train ride away. Any you can do it at a relaxed pace. Go for it!! TC
We spent a full month there in 2013 and are going back this October ( but only for five days this time as we are including other places too).
Read up on the history and culture and you will appreciate it more. We particularly like "the City of Falling Angels" ( by John Berendt) which gives some insight into the political and cultural quirks of this fascinating city.
Mcguirenet,
I would only stay 10 days in Venice if I'd visited the rest of Italy... but that would be a stretch for me...
but having said that, it really depends on you, since only you know your interests.
If I had 10 days in Italy starting in Venice, I'd venture out to Padua, (Padova) Verona & Lake Garda&/or the Dolomites, Ferrara, Ravenna...
If I had 10 days in Italy and had to stay in one location, I'd stay in Florence & take day trips all over Tuscany & Umbria.
Enjoy your trip!
I wouldn't mind 10 days in Venice. I'll be back for 5 more in a couple of weeks and when I do my 5 day visits they are never enough.
Don't forget that a really nice day is to go on a visit of the islands of San Michele, Murano, Burano and Torcello. Be sure to get the Rick Steves book specifically on Venice and the Veneto to see lots of options.
What time of year are you going?
We've spent more than 10 days at a time in Venice and had a great time! We like being able to move at a slower pace, take our time seeing the sights, and just getting lost in the back streets. You'll have time to visit some of the islands, go out to the Lido if you want, and time visits to the more popular sights when they aren't completely overrun in the middle of the day.
Definitely do it!
I can picture 10-days in Venice easily (with the right hotel view, I would think), but have to agree with a previous comment that the itch to visit other places in Italy would gnaw at me!
A couple of short hops here and there may be needed, but it sounds like a nice relaxing time overall.
Thank you all for the information and opinions. They are very helpful to us in our planning.
A tour of the canals by boat gives you a wonderfully different view of Venice: Vivi Venezia: http://www.vivivenezia.org/vivivenezia.org/Home.html
Could easily do 10 days in Venice.
