10 days? I'd be bored to death after 3 days.
The best part is probably the Midlake area. The main towns in that area are Varenna on the East shore, Menaggio on the West and the most famous, Bellagio, in the middle of the promontory. However there are lots of smaller villages that are just as pretty.
The Como branch of the lake (southwest branch) all the way down to Cernobbio is, IMO, prettier than the Lecco branch. However that's just my opinion. All villages are connected by boat and buses. The rail runs only on the eastern shore and in the southern tips (Como and Lecco).
Menaggio, on the west shore, is also connected via bus to Lugano, CH.

Roberto I hesitate to suggest that you have your RS-hyped towns mixed up. Its Varenna to which you are referring, not Vernazza, yes?

Corrected. It's Varenna. I was just giving advice on the Cinque Terre on another post and got the two mixed up.

Have you considered Lake Maggiore or Lake Garda?

Verona is very close to Lake Garda.

lin,

I also think that 10 days on Lago di Como is a bit much, and although I like that area, I would also be bored after three days or so. Could you provide more information on the circumstances of your trip (ie: why you want to spend 10 days there)?

Bellagio is in my top ten of most disappointing destinations in Europe. An elaborate shopping village. Yuck.
