10 Days in Italy with 5 mo old twins

My wife and I are flying into Rome at the end of the month with our 5 month old twins. Spur of the moment so loose plan was 3/4 days in Rome and the rest on a beach. Looking for advice on places to stay in Rome and a suggestions on great beaches (leaning Amalfi coast). We'll be stroller and backbacking with the kids and need a home base in Rome and elsewhere for daytime naps for the grommets.

Robert,, just wondering,, do you know what the weather will be like at the end of October on the beaches in the south?? It will likely not be swimming weather.. it isn't tropical like Hawaii and warm all year.

The beaches along the Amalfi Coast are not what you would expect. Most of the coast is rocky cliffs that plunge straight into the water. Where you do find beaches, they are rocky/gravel beaches and not sandy. If you want a sandy beach, look North to the Ligurian Coast around Viareggio or the Adriatic Coast between Ravenna and Rimini. For a nice ground floor place to stay in Rome, check out "Arco Del Lauro" located in Trastevere. Being last-minute, they may not have availability though. [http://www.arcodellauro.it/index.php?lang=en]. Having two infants and all the equipment that they require, I recommend packing as lightly as possible. Getting on/off public transportation will be no picnic. Beware that crooks will be more than happy to take advantage of your little distractions, so keep your belongings safe and close at hand. You may want to avoid public transportation altogether and opt for taxis instead (from a taxi stand only).

I would stay in the city center in Rome so you are not to far from the sites and it'll be easier to get back to the room for naps. You don't say what your budget is but you can check the Albergo del Senato. You can also check venere.com for hotels or apartments. The most central areas are pantheon, navona and trevi. You can also check the termini and vatican areas. They are a little further out but you can get very good rates and maybe a larger room. Donna

Robert, It will be too cold for the beach (even for an Idahoan, trust me I grew up there) and the beach clubs will be closed around Amalfi. I live in Naples and the weather has turned cool. If you still really want to head south you might consider Sorrento too. It is beautiful, usually less expensive than Amalfi, and you can still go over to Capri for the day if you want. Definitely look for heated pools!
