10 days in Italy. What to do?

I am planning the first leg of my honeymoon for late May/early June 2014. We'd like to spend 10 days touring Italy. Our only requirement is that we finish in the south as we will be taking a ferry from Bari over to Greece. I think I'm overestimating the time we have and was hoping for some real perspective. Is this reasonable for 2 young, active people. Also, we are willing to rent a car for the full duration of the trip if that makes sense: Fly into Venice - spend 2 nights Head down to Florence - spend 2 nights Head down to Rome - spend 2 nights Head down to Naples/Salerno - spend 2 nights
Depart from Bari I'm sure this is too much. Any thoughts on how I should modify? We're really keen on seeing the major sites, and just sort of wandering the cities. Thanks for any feedback!

congratulations Alexis on your upcoming nuptials!! In a word, I would say "yes" it is too much - it is doable (just about anything is) but the question really boils down to what you want for your honeymoon and based upon this schedule, you will be spending more time in transit that in seeing Italy! A few points to bear in mind - 1. Each change of location will eat up 1/2 to 3/4 of a day assuming you take the train (packing up, checking out, getting to the train station, train trip itself, finding and checking into the new hotel, etc.). I really don't recommend a car for the cities you have listed - you absolutely don't want one in Venice, Florence or Rome! 2. I will assume that you and your fiance will both be a bit tired after the wedding with all the excitement and festivities!! So I would recommend limiting yourself 2 or 3 of the cities you've listed - you easily could add at least 1 day to each or more - this will not only give you more time in each city, but will also make for a more relaxed trip and hopefully a more enjoyable one.
3. Read through some guidebooks and see what appeals for each of these areas and that should help you narrow down what you really want to see.

Yes ,well the ferry idea is probably not the best .I would skip Naples, spend an extra day in Rome and or Florence, and then fly to Greece from Rome, many cheap flights..

I would for go the Naples / Salerno leg. We did 10 days for the V-F-R leg and it was great. If anything, add a day trip to Sienna from Florence. That is just a 1 hour bus ride and well worth it.

Congrats. Well I have to agree with the other reply. You have too many stops for 10 days. I would do Venice 2 nights, then choose two other cities and stay 3 nights in each. I havebeen to all of the cities several times and say that you will be exhusted if you do 4 cities. Oh such decisions.. Florence great food and museums and shopping, leather and GOLD OMG. Rome I could spend a week and not see everything. I would eliminate Naples/Salerno and opt for Amalfi Coast or Sorrento as a base and visit Positano and Capri. The Amalfi coast is a little slower paced. Take a train from each city. Renting a car in those cities is unnecessary. Besides you are on your honeymoon. You want to relax, train transit is great. Hotels: Venice: Al Codega Rome: Angelo Americano or Aberdeen Those are suggestions. The other cities we rented a villa for an extended stay.

You have 8 nights on the ground, major tourist city destinations (3 pearls of Italy: Rome, Florence and Venice). I would do (days count assumes morning arrival at each destination): 2 nights in Venice (1.5 days in Venice) 3 nights in Florence (2.5 days in Florence, with one possible day trip to Tuscan countryside, like Chianti hills, or small town)
3 nights in Rome (2.5 days in Rome) You don't have time to include Naples' area. Fly from Rome to Greece. Going from Rome to Brindisi, then the ferry, then the bus from Patras to Athens will take 2 days. A flight from Rome to Athens takes less than 2 hours, including taxing on the tarmac.

Roberto has posted several of these "how to improve your itinerary" posts recently. I agree with all of them, including this one. Please heed all of his advice, including cutting cutting out anything south of Rome, and flying between Italy and Greece. You just don't have time to see everything, and unless you want to spend all of your honeymoon in transit, you need to make the changes he (and everyone else) is advising.

DAY 1: you'll get in Venice and just head to your hotel and relax. DAY 2: Venice DAY 3: Venice-Florence - I would suggest you take the train FRECCIARGENTO which takes 2 hours and reserving it in advance will cost you 9€ per person. Get in Florence by noon and spend the rest of the day sightseeing (i got for my parents a few months ago a 2 night stay at the Best Western Premier Hotel Laurus al Duomo) DAY 4: sightseeing in Florence for the morning. rent a car and leave florance in the afternoon. choose an "agriturismo" and spend a night there. they are usually family-runned properties. DAY 5: move to Rome by car ( the Termini train station as drop-off) and spend at least 2 full days sightseeing. when you get in the termini station, either take a taxi to the hotel or use the metro system. if you want i can scan for you a map of rome were i wrote down a bike tour that lets you see pretty much of everything. i did it in 4 hours as i already knew the city, i would assume for a first time rome visitor it would take 1 full day. DAY 8: Take the FRECCIAROSSA from Rome to Salerno and rent a car there and spend the day sightseeing on the Amalfi coast. Salerno should be a lot easier than Naples train station. spend the night on the coast. B&B are usually really cute down there.
DAY 9: it takes 3 hours by car from salerno to bari (245km). you can spend the night in bari, which should be cute too, and leave the next day for greece. if you want to, you can skip the tuscany hills simply using a FRECCIAROSSA from florence santa maria novella to rome Termini station.

Thank you all for your informative responses. As I suspected, it was too much. It pains me to miss the Amalfi coast portion of the trip but with Greece awaiting us, it doesn't really make sense to head so far south. I wonder however, if a day trip from Florence is feasible, instead of heading to the Tuscan Hills? As for ferry to Greece, I am actually intending a direct flight to the island of Kefalonia. It is where my family has a summer home and I'll be heading straight to it. I understand that there's a direct ferry from Bari to the island. Thanks again!

I think you are getting it down to a doable honeymoon... however, you have all big cities and I think some of the most romantic parts of Italy are in the countryside (except Venice) so for you to miss villages and vineyards in Tuscany might be a mistake. If it were me, I would stay in Tuscany in a beautiful village for a few nights and take a day trip to Florence (or skip it altogether) for a bit of variety. You do not need a car for the whole trip, but you could do a few days in Tuscany with a car.
