10 Days in Italy in October - Third Destination besides Rome and Florence?

Good morning!

My boyfriend and I (both 27) are flying into Rome on 10/11 and flying out of Rome 10/22. We want to spend around 4 days in Rome and around 3 days in Florence. We are trying to decide what to do with the rest of our time.

Would 2 days in Cinque Terre be too much travel? It looks like it is 4.5 hours from Rome and 2.5 hours from Florence via train.

Does anyone have any recommendations for towns in between or around Rome and Florence that we could stay at/do day trips to? We would appreciate a town that has some unique historical sites and is accessible via train.

I think it’s always best to choose something that appeals to you personally. Do you have a guidebook, so you can see what places are between the two on the train/bus routes?
I think CT would eat a lot of travel time on the train, the weather could turn at that time of year, and you did not mention being attracted by hiking. I’d consider a town in Tuscany instead like Siena, or Orvieto in Umbria.

Agree with above
Orvieto is lovely and will give you a quiet small hilltown experience between the 2 busy cities
It’s right on the train line to Rome

I would travel onward to Florence on arrival and put all Rome nights at end

Arrive Rome
Train to Florence-wait til arrival to buy train tix
Florence 4 nights gives you 3 full days which allows time for a day trip if you like (Siena or Lucca)
Train to Orvieto 2 nights
Train to Rome 5 nights
Fly home
