10 days from Naples to Reggio Calabria and back to Naples

With 10 days of travel including flights to and from, does it make sense to fly into Naples, then rent a car and explore Cetara and the Amalfi Coast, then drive south to Reggio? Or would a train from Naples to Calabria make more sense? One itinerary is to fly into Naples, drive to Reggio and explore along the way, then hydro-foil to Messina, on to Taormina and fly out of Catania. I'm afraid Alitalia is my only option out of Catania back to Naples. I'm not travelling until late March 2018, if that matters. Will we pay extra for the rental car if we pick up in Naples and return in Catania? Also, I'm interested in local cooking classes(not culinary institutes, rather small private classes along the route from Naples to Amalfi to Reggio to Taormina. Any suggestions or advice about the best way to travel this route so that we experience the best this area has to offer?

Check EasyJet for flights from Catania to Napoli.

You can rent a car at Napoli Capodicchino airport (NAP) and drive to the Amalfi Coast (stop in Salerno, Paestum, and Tropea if you like), to Reggio Calabria, take a car ferry from Villa San Giovanni (make sure this is okay with rental car company). Then turn in the car when you leave Catania to fly out.
