We were headed to Italy (first trip) and spending 3 nights in Rome, 2 in Venice, 3 in Cinque Terra, 2 in Tuscany - but now based on travel dates (first of Nov) and overwhelming recommendations from many of you - we are removing the 3 nights in CT. Question is - what to do with those - should I add a night each to Rome\Venice\Tuscany - or should we add another location?
Where in Tuscany? I would probably add a night to each of your destinations.
Counting nights: 4 Rome, 3 Venice, 3 Siena. 4 nights in Rome will give you time to really appreciate the city without rushing too much from site to site. 3 nights in Venice gives you two full days, a minimum IMHO, for that lovely city. Siena is lovely itself, but also affords access to Florence for the art scene, or a daytrip to Volterra or another hilltown or two by either bus or car. Read up on these cities in Rick's guidebook. Make a list of what appeals to you and figure out how to fit in the sites and activities. Be sur to note hours and days sites are open/closed so you don't miss anything important to you. That will help you envision how the days will flow.
