10-day tour of Rome and a Beach

My wife and I are planning a 10-day trip to Rome and somewhere in southern Italy with a nice beach. This trip will be with our oldest daughter (26) and her husband (27) at the end of May. Do you have any suggestions for towns with nice beaches that we could take a train to from Rome. From what I read we should plan for 4-5 days in Rome not including the travel days (arrival and departure). Suggested itinerary would be great. What should we definitely plan to see in Rome? Thanks
Peter

Peter, It's difficult to recommend sights to "definitely plan to see" as your interests may differ from mine. I'd suggest having a look at Italy 2013 Guidebook (check local Libraries or book stores) or you can order from this website. It's also available as an E-book in several formats. The Guidebook has LOTS of good information on the sights in Rome, as well as hotels, restaurants, transportation details, etc. I don't spend a lot of time on beaches, but I'm sure the others will have some good suggestions. Based on my observations, three places that have nice beaches are Positano (Amalfi Coast), Monterosso (Cinque Terre, Liguria in the north) and the area near Rimini and Pesaro on the Adriatic coast. The easiest of those to access is likely Monterosso (~3H:45M via direct train to La Spezia and then a short ride on the local train to Monterosso). Positano will likely take the most time requiring two different trains and then a Bus ride. There are some beaches near Rome, but I don't have a lot of information on those. You might find some information on the excellent Ron In Rome website. Happy travels!
