Hi. We are a family of four (2 kids ages 11 and 14). You would like to travel to Italy in the end of December (Dec 22- Jan2). To avoid a really cold weather we would like to travel to southern Italy where climate is a little warmer. Can you suggest 10-day itinerary for us?
We did a trip in late Dec./early Jan. 2012. Flew in to Rome for a couple days, then flew to Palermo, Sicily. We rented a car and toured Sicily, took the car ferry back to the mainland, and drove up to Sorrento. Turned in the rental car, after seeing Pompeii and Naples. Took trains back to atone and flew home.
Christmas and New Year’s were great times to visit. Not so hot, and not so crowded.
How many nights will you sleep in IT?
Also please inform the group what you like to do.
We'll be staying 10 nights and we're interested in exploring cultural aspects, history and sightseeing
If you want to visit the mainland, go to Rome, and take day trips to Orvieto and Florence. If you go to Florence buy tickets for the Uffizi Gallery two months out to guarantee a reservation. From Rome take a nonstop train from Roma’s Termini station to Naples Centrale. At Naples central station go downstairs and get on the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (end of line). Use Sorrento as your base to visit the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Naples, etc. It would be best to fly in and out of Rome and Naples. If this isn’t convenient fly roundtrip to and from Rome.
Another option is to go to Sicily and fly in and out of Siracusa and Palermo. You can get around by train with both itineraries but Sicily will involve more transfers that can be a pain. If you want to get around by train stick with the Rome itinerary. If you want to rent a car then go to Sicily but be sure to read up on the ZTL zone laws.
To me southern Italy is Naples, Sicily, Lecce, Bari. What do you consider southern Italy so we can better advise you.
