10 Day Itinerary Feedback

Looking for feedback/suggestions for an Italy trip next May. We want to see a lot without feeling hectic. We love history and food.

Day 1- Fly to Rome and take train to Florence
Day 2- Florence
Day 3- Florence
Day 4- Florence to Sorrento
Day 5- Sorrento/Amalfi Coast
Day 6- Sorrento/Amalfi Coast
Day 7- Sorrento/Amalfi Coast
Day 8- Pompeii and Rome
Day 9- Rome
Day 10- fly home

I realize this doesn’t give us a ton of time in Rome. While in Florence we want to see some more of Tuscany and while in Sorrento we want to do Capri and the AC. Maybe 3 nights each place is better? I have been to Rome and Florence but no one else I’m traveling with has been. Suggestions? Alternatives? Thanks!

It's fine.

Since it is such a haul to go from Florence to Sorrento- keep 4 nights there.

Any chance you can fly in to Florence- out of Naples
or
in to Rome out of Naples?

Rome is definitely getting short shrift. One evening and 1 full day- not time for much more than a good walk around the historic center and viewing Colosseum from the outside - but it is what it is!

With only two full days in Florence, you’ll be pretty much confined to the city itself, not “Tuscany.”

If you have a morning flight departure, you could skip Rome; last night a hotel stay [e.g. Hotel Tiber] in the seaside town of Fiumicino, not needing to arrive until dinner time.

There is a direct train from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Firenze SM Novella at 13:53, otherwise you change downtown, referring to the train number on the departure board to identify the platform [binario].

There are two ways to Sorrento—local train to Pompeii Scavi from Napoli P Garibaldi [downstairs at Napoli Centrale]. The Campania Express is the better one; or a driver. I advise getting a quote from Sorrentocars just to know. But if selecting the train option, visit Pompeii on the way to Sorrento. There is a baggage drop [deposito bagagli] at he ruins.

Doable, you and your companion(s) will be exhausted though.
I'm not a fan of backtracking however I get it if that's how your flight tickets are.

3nts each in both Florence and Sorrento will be the trip, a day & half in Rome really isn't much time and will likely leave a different impression on your partner than what you've experienced in prior visits.

I’m tempted to narrow it down to two places and that would probably be Rome and Sorrento but when I think about missing out on Florence I get sad. I do remember loving it. Although someone I know referred to Florence as “boring” I wish there was a way to combined the two cities!

Two locations makes more sense if you truly want to not feel hectic. How about Rome and Sorrento? Go to Sorrento on arrival and stay 4 nights. Visit Pompeii if you must on the way to Rome. Spend 5 nights and make a day trip to Florence if it calls to you. read RS book on Florence and pick out the things that appeal to you most. There is always "next time" if you love Florence.

Thanks for the help. Are there towns in Tuscany close to Rome that are a good day trip? Also, what’s the deal with Tivoli?

It works for me. My only note would be to plan on Pompeii as one of your “Sorrento days” perhaps combined with an afternoon in Naples, rather than en route back to Rome. That would be rough, and this would give you a healthy day in Rome. You have three full days in Sorrento, which is enough time to do at least one day trip to Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii/Herculaneum and Naples too.

Thanks for the feedback. Revised itinerary:

Day 1- fly into Rome, take train to Naples and grab a bite to eat. Private transfer to Sorrento

Day 2- Explore Sorrento

Day 3- explore the Amalfi Coast

Day 4- Day trip to Capri

Day 5- private transfer back to Naples stopping in Pompeii for a few hours, then train back to Rome

Day 6- Spend the day exploring Rome

Day 7- take train to Orvieto for the day

Day 8- Vatican/ Rome

Day 9- Rome and maybe half the day in Casel Gandolfo or Tivoli

Day 10- fly home

We will miss out on Florence but I do think the little side trips from Rome will be a nice break from the city.

Looks good
The only thing I might change is to visit Pompeii as a day trip from Sorrento-go early before it’s too hot
You don’t really need a full day to explore Sorrento as you will have each evening there

Pompeii is an exhausting visit then train to Rome I would be dead in my feet by the time I got to Rome
Get to Rome sooner for more time there
