1 week in Tropea

Hi

So I have 6 weeks before I leave for Italy. My first stop is spending a week at a timeshare in Tropea. I will be arriving around 8 PM after 24 hrs of travel by plane and train. I know that I will keep the next day low key as I will be fighting jet lag. What are some good day trips from Tropea. Will not have a car. Planning to use train.

Thanks

I've heard that Tropea is very pretty, but after taking a look at the Google map of the area, I have no day-trips to suggest because I don't recognize the names of any of the surrounding towns. To make matters worse, Tropea has relatively little rail service. If you want to head north, you'll need to start with a 50- to 55-minute regionale trip to Lamezia Terme--an obvious place for you to research. But there are only two departures in that direction that are timed well for day-trips--one at 8:45 AM and one at 12:45 PM. You'll need to check schedules carefully to be sure you can get back to Tropea from the places you want to visit.

Perhaps there is useful bus service. That part of Italy isn't very well served by trains. A few years ago I wanted to travel from Sicily to Puglia, and I opted to take a bus. That's how slow and limited the train service was.

thefer, We stayed at the same timeshare in Tropea. It is up a very steep hill from downtown Tropea. We had a car for the four of us but I seem to remember that there was a scheduled shuttle into town throughout the day. The activities desk at the resort had tours on offer which included a day trip by bus/ferry to Taormina, Sicily and a boat trip to the volcano on the island of Stromboli. During our week ( mid May) the weather was sunny and quite windy therefore the boat trips to Stromboli didn't happen. We didn't take the Sicily trip as we were travelling there afterwards but our friends did and they enjoyed it very much. As we had a car, we aren't familiar with bus and train connections but the front desk of the resort could probably help you. If you arrive at the resort at the end of May, you will probably find the swimming pool filled and open. During our stay they were just filling it and putting out deck furniture and the water temp. was cold as I don't think that they heat it. Tropea has nice beaches below the town to walk or to swim. The resort has a beautiful ocean view including Stromboli. We very much enjoyed staying there but please don't expect too much modernity, it is an older resort with very helpful and friendly staff. How are you planning to get to the resort? I don't remember a train station but maybe just didn't see it. If you already haven't, I would contact the resort for travel advice. Hope that this information helps you.
