1 night in Orvieto or Bagnoregio?

My family of 5 (kids 13, 11, 9) will be driving from the Florence area on Sat, June 22, staying 1 night in either Ovieto or Bagnoregio, and then driving to Civitavecchia on Sun, June 23 to return the Hertz rental car and hop on a cruise. We plan to visit both Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio on Sat, June 22. So where is the better place to stay for 1 night? Is there a hotel that has a room that fit the 5 of us?

I would think that Orvieto might be a better choice with children those ages. The funicular probably would be enjoyable to them. Also St Patrick's well, the caves, climbing the tower. And for adults, the cathedral is beautiful and it's a lovely town to wander in. I think there's more variety in Orvieto than Bagnoregio. Not sure about hotel rooms that large; suggest checking what RS guide lists; it often identifies places with larger accomidations. You could also consider returning the car in Orvieto and taking the train to Civitavecchia.

Pam, I definitely agree with the previous suggestion from Sherry. IMO, Orvieto would be a much better place to stay. It's a larger town, has more sights and will provide more to do in the evening. Be sure to have a look at the incredible Signorelli frescoes in the Duomo. You might have a look at Hotel Corso (although you might have to rent both a triple and a double). I don't know of any Hotels in that area that could accommodate five in one room. Happy travels!

Orvieto is a really neat hill town situated 1 hr. north of Rome. Villa Acquafredda is easily found online, and it was the nicest room of our stay and at a very fair price. Unfortunately traveling with 5 people sometimes requires 2 rooms. Hertz in Orvieto is another great place to return a rental car, and the office is across from their train station.

Check out Casa Selita in Orvieto. It is below the city walls, so it is convenient with a car. We loved her down comforters (Italy is known for thin coverings !) and feather pillows ! She was a consummate host ! And she gave us flashlights to hike up to the city through her olive grove-we felt like kids and totally enjoyed the experience !

We love Orvieto and stayed at La Magnolia for $60 in 2008. We stayed in a lovely double but she has an adjoining larger room. The guests in that room turned out to live 5 miles from our home.

We also loved our stay at La Magnolia - they have apartments that are very comfortable - I'd check with Serena to see if the apartments would sleep 5!

Sharon and Karen,
Thanks for the referral for La Magnolia. I've also contacted them if they have a room for 5. Both this place and Casa Selita received great reviews on tripadvisor. Hopefully one of the two will work out!
