1 Month in Italy & Need Help

hi everyone,

We're planning on spending about a month next summer (from July 19 into August) in Northern Italy. We have visited Italy a couple of times before including Florence, Cinque Terre and the lakes district. We will be arriving in Italy following a three week organized tour of the Baltic countries including Poland and St Petersburg. We love Italy and want to explore some previously unexplored areas, however, we don't want it to be a whirlwind experience.

Our initial thought is to spend 3 nights in Venice, 10 days in Bologna (never been before and great location for train connections) and 10 days in Florence (staying in the Oltrano neighborhood or outskirts). While we've been to Florence before there is so much to do there and it provides excellent train connections. We're thinking of side trips to Lucca, Verona, Modena, Parma, Ravenna and one or two towns in Tuscany. Should we spend 3-5 days in Lucca and another town in Tuscany instead of those locations being brief side trips? Which locations (and any others) should we consider and for how long. We will be getting around by trains/ buses/cabs/walking and uber if available. We will not be driving. Generally, we like absorbing/exploring/walking around towns and enjoy shopping, food, live performances, cafes, walking tours, wine, etc. Are there any must see/do things such as festivals occurring. I know this is wide reaching but whatever input others can provide will be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Arlene in Tucson

I'll tell you how I decide which destinations should be side-trips from which city: I do not like 1-night or 2-night stops. If I can find an attractive place with two good side trips (unless the destinations are really tiny, in which case I'd perhaps look for three), I'll stay there for three nights rather than extending my stay in a (probably larger) city that's farther away and means longer out-and-back trips on a train or bus. If the base I'm considering is largish and has a lot of sights of its own (like Bologna), I'll add an extra night. An incredibly sight-rich city like Florence would get even more time.

I like both Lucca and Ravenna, but absent a couple of attractive side-trips or a route than found one of them on the way to my next stop, I would probably treat them as side-trips from somewhere else. They both seemed as if they'd be really nice overnight stops, but I have to weigh that against the degree to which I dislike changing hotels. I do not drive in Europe. I'm a rather slow traveler, but I don't like to be mired in a small city after I've seen what I want to see; there are too many places I still haven't visited even one time.

Bologna would be better for side trips to Parma, Modena and Ravenna. Lucca would more readily be a side trip from Florence. Since you’ll be there during a hot time of year, you may want to spend some time at a place with a pool, perhaps an agriturismo.

I loved Verona, beautiful ancient city with piazzas, churches, centrally located train station, great shopping and restaurants. I highly recommend a hidden gem family owned restaurant called Osteria II Bertoldo where I had one of thee best meals of my life- Father runs the Bar- MaMa makes all the desserts, the Son is the waiter- we had great conversation and one of the best nights drinking wine and eating in their lovely restaurant- Veronas Arena is older than the Colosseum- Juliets wall and balcony- dont miss Verona!
