1 day trip in southern Italy- what is a must see? Paestum, Pompeii, Salerno

What would be a "must-see" for a 1 day trip to the surrounding areas of Paestum, Pompeii, and/or Salerno? What are best food and attractions that can't be missed! Are there better places to travel with little kids or sights to see without kids?

What are the ages of the children? Some may find Pompeii upsetting and I don't think very small children would necessarily get much out of it. The heat can be intense, so what month?
Where are you coming from?

We are traveling next week to the Giungano area! April 14-18. Our kids are ages 2 and 4, but we potentially have the opportunity to leave the kids with family for a day. We are trying to find fun kids activities/places, but also day trip "must-see" whether with kids or not.

Oh yes I recall your prior question now.
I don't know of anything specifically for children that small, but many pair a visit to Paestum with a visit to a mozzarella farm and they may enjoy that.
If you are kid-free for the day, I would pick what most appeals to you! If you are interested in the history of Pompeii, then a day there might be just the thing to enjoy without littles (those cobblestones mean they can't just run around; whereas Paestum is situated in some grassy fields so more child friendly).

OTOH, taking a day trip along the Amalfi Coast from Salerno and drinking wine might be fun too.

Paestum and Tenuta Vannulo would be a day trip that’s easy on the driving/transportation from Giungano - where you are staying per your other post - and it would work nicely for the kids.

Tenuta Vannulo is just 4 miles or so from the ruins (and museum) at Paestum. It is a buffalo cheese farm. Our host in Pisciotta described it as a spa for the buffalo and he was right. After seeing the barn, milking stations and cheese production you and the kids can enjoy gelato. The tours are mornings only - or were last year anyway. So, buffalo first, then on to the ruins. See https://www.tenutavannulo.com/en/

Paestum has structures that did not suffer from a mountain raining down on them, so your 4 year old would get a wow factor. And the museum on site would have interesting mosaics and pottery for your 4 year old’s ten minute attention span.

We actually held off on our gelato until after Paestum, since I have a self-imposed rule about no ice cream or chocolate before noon. (Tenuta Vannulo is just a quick turn off the highway from Paestum toward Salerno/Naples.)

The drive from Paestum up to Salerno is boring, tedious and not very nice. If you do that, the kids may need some parental engagement and attention. We did not spend time in Salerno so I can’t help you there. I don’t think I’d try to take such small children to Pompeii.
