1 Day in Venice

I will have one full day in Venice over all (most the day and two evenings on the bookends of my trip.) How do I make the most of my time?

You might want to see the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's square just to check off two of the "biggies". Otherwise, unless you have a particular interest in something, just wander around the back streets and get "lost". You're on an island so you'll find your way back eventually. And one of the great things about doing that is that you will get to see some of the real, everyday Venice. The only other specific thing you may (or may not) want to visit is the Jewish Ghetto. If you are like most people, this visit will only whet your appetite for more and you'll find yourself wanting to return.

Get up early.
Go to Rialto Market. It's adjacent to Rialto Bridge. Even if you're not shopping ingredients to make a meal, it's still amazing to see (and photograph if that's your thing)
Then go to Piazza San Marco and enjoy it before the crowds show up

Ride a vaporetto down the Grand Canal. It will cost you 9.50 euros, and it will be crowded--somewhat less so if you travel toward the train station in the morning or away from the train station later in the day. If you plan to take a lot of vaporetto trips (I would not, but some people like to hop on and off), you may save money with a 25-euro, 24-hour pass. The vaporetti are very, very expensive. Venice isn't terribly large, but there's that canal running through the city, and there aren't many bridges across it.
