1 day Dolomite experience

We used Bolzano as our base, and spent a great day in Merano, and devoted one day to the Dolomites. We got up early, and got the first bus from Bolzano to Ortisei at 7:30 am (5 eu I think). It took nearly an hour. Ortisei is a beautiful town thats been given the Disneyland treatment. From there we walked to a cable car gong up to Seceda (37 eu each rt). In theory, you could just stay in Ortisei as a base because there were cable cars coming down to the city from several angles going to different mountains.

Once we got up near Seceda, it was another 200-300 meters of hiking climb to get the main view. In September, day time and sunny, it was in the 30's and windy. You could also see a number of other famous ranges in the same area - such as Sassoluongo. We then walked down the paths (it a little too organized and civilized to be called hiking). There were half a dozen or so restaurant huts which were pretty good and not that expensive. then came the walk back up 900 feet, which was exhausting. In all we spent the entire day up there, and came back down near the last cable car at 5:30 pm. Then walked down and picked up the bus back to Bolzano from an open air bus "station" behind an old church. Then back to Bolzano just before sun went down, and a good dinner.

We felt like we got a full day experience without having to pay $250 a night in Ortisei.

We later visited Trento. Its an ok place, but I was a bit underwhelmed. I guess its main claim to fame is cathedral/fountain/tower complex in the city square. It was much smaller than I anticipated - it feels smaller than Merano or Bolzano. Some guide books seem to favor Trento as a preferred city but I think we would pass on stopping there again.

We next went to Verona - that station is a madhouse. To ask a question of the train office meant taking a number and waiting 20 minutes. There are also dozens of high school kids smoking and hanging out at the train station. From past experience, its too long of a walk to get to the city center unless you plan on staying. One cool thing though is that you can get a cappuccino for 1.60 which was pretty decent. (Compare to 4-8 eu in Vienna).

Then to Venice ... I hate to say this as a tourist, but that place is overrun with tourists, and locals trying to fleee them. I never want to return to that place again.

Trieste is fairly boring except the Miramare chateau which is a short bus ride away - and its free to roam the gardens and exterior for great photos. The main center water way is ugly more than pretty. There is a nice restaurant district maybe half mile inland from the water inlet - but we were turned away from every restaurant without having reservations. Trieste is really cheap. And there strangely dozens of Chinese owned shops and restaurants, and prices are low.

100% agree about Venice. We stayed there for 1 night, on the way back from Cortina en route to Milan.

Completely over run with tourists.

We did get up at 6 am and walked around San Marco square. It was magical and like how Venice was supposed to be experienced.

I've just returned home from 9 nights in Venice. The crowding along the walking route from the train station to the Rialto area and on to San Marco is really bad, and the mobs also affect side streets around San Marco. Otherwise, I found walking around very pleasant. When I ran into other folks in other areas, they seemed to be locals going about their business. It's critical to allow yourself enough time in Venice to see neighborhoods beyond those popular with the daytrippers. We try to warn about that when folks are planning a first trip to Venice.

We stayed several days near the guglie bridge in Venice. Always crowded from 9 am to 9 pm or so. We ran right into an environmental protest on that bridge with 200 locals. We spent hours and hours walking all around and it was nothing but tourists. The only restaurant we like was next to the opera house which was ok. Our best meal was in Treviso.

In past years, I’ve stayed on Lido Island which is laid back.

The Venice of art and naval power is effectively gone. And a Disney version of it exists on the site.
