Which Marriott in Venice

My husband and I will be traveling to Venice with another couple for 4 days in June after a cruise. We are Marriott rewards members and we are trying to decide whether to use our points at the AC Hotel Venezia in Venice or the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa. Any recommendations to help us decide between these two Marriott hotels?

I think the Resort and Spa is maybe a better choice. Looks like a great setting on a small island just off Venice. It will require a shuttle boat to and from Venice itself but the boat will take you to San Marco area, pretty much the centre of things. The Venizia looks as if it is just off Piazzale Rome and there were lots of cars and parking around iit in the photos on the website. Cars are unusual in Venice and Piazzale is busy with buses, taxis and boats 24. Hours a day. Not many restaurants around that area either, It looks to be a mainly residential area between the cruise terminal and the main transportation hub. Have a look at the photos on the Marriott website to get an idea of the area.

We stayed at the JW Marriott Resort for five nights. It’s a beautiful property and setting. After spending the day in Venice with the crowds, it was nice to have a quiet and spacious place to relax with great views. Taking the shuttle boat was fun and a way to meet interesting fellow travelers.

The need for a shuttle boat to and from the island on which the Resort & Spa is located raises red flags for me. This pre-pandemic online article says the shuttle boat runs (or did run) every 30 minutes. It could be a lot worse, but having only two boats per hour would drive me wild. Then again, I don't stay in fancy European hotels because I don't much care about my lodgings, so for me there wouldn't be any significant advantages to what I'm sure is a very nice hotel to balance the annoyance of being dependent on the shuttle. No doubt most others would disagree.

We spent one night at the AC hotel in September, prior to flying from Venice back to London. We have been to Venice several times and have spent as long as a month there, to celebrate our retirement 10 years ago. On this occasion, we just wanted easy access to the airport for our flight, so the Piazzale Roma location made sense to us. The hotel is very nice and met our needs.

It is right by the large parking lot and bus area, and the entrance door is on that side, but otherwise you would not notice the cars. The rooms face a canal on the other side. It was an easy walk for us across the nearest canal into the Santo Croce neighborhood, to wander down to Zattere along the Giudecca canal all the way to the tip of Dorsoduro. It was nice for our purposes, as it is a very non-touristy area and we only heard Italian spoken on our walk. And we love walking in Venice. But it was a 25-minute walk to our chosen restaurant for dinner.

For a longer stay, the AC would not be my first choice, but it wouldn’t be my last choice either. It depends on your travel style and goals—-does the JW Marriott resort hotel appeal to you, and are you aware of the drawbacks of staying on another island and depending on a boat shuttle?

Are you not considering other Marriott properties, such as the classic Danieli?

Marriott's Bonvoy recently discontinued the option for Danieli stays in their points program. We were looking to use some points there during a trip, and saw that it's no longer available. Gritti Palace is still part of Bonvoy pgm, and on similar scale with Danieli, but search reflected it would take 480,000 pts for a five-night lodging (even with Bonvoy's "stay four nights, get the fifth free" bonus). Yikes!

Wow. I thought I saw a points offer for the Danieli but the Gritti Palace did not appear at all on a search. I wonder what is going on. We paid an uncomfortable €600 for the AC Venezia in mid-September, probably because it was a last-minute booking ( thanks to British Airways canceling our original flights). It is down to €149 for March in my search, but the Bonvoy points cost is high.

We prefer to take an apartment for a multi-night stay in Venice anyway. But that doesn’t help the OP if they are hoping to use Marriott points.
