Where to stay in Florence

In September 2025 we’re going to Italy for the first time. We’ll be arriving in Florence by train from Rome and are looking for a place to stay. Are hotels near the main sights walkable from the train station?

Yes! In fact, most of the main sights themselves are easily walkable from the train station. And should you fly into Florence, there's a tram line from the airport that ends just about a half block or so in front of the train station.

Although you might want to take a taxi to the hotel since you'll have luggage, check out the Hotel California. We were able to walk to all of the sight from there. Beautiful place to stay with a great breakfast.

Also check out Hotel l'Orologio, which is a short walk from the train station. I've stayed there twice, and loved it. Rooms are lovely and the breakfast is indeed excellent. It's near to Piazza Santa Maria Novella, which has great people watching, a pretty church, not one but two nearby gelaterias, and nice neighborhood restaurants a few blocks back from the tourist paths.

We stayed at Hotel Cellai, walkable from the train station with wheeled carry ons and the city center sights. Good breakfast, comfortable affordable rooms, funky sort of lobby with seating areas and a bar (which wasn't open when we were there for some reason). Immediate neighborhood did not seem have much selection for coffee/eating, but, that could have been our lack of exploration or knowledge.
