Do you mean the TOWN of Amalfi or the Amalfi COAST region?

Safety is not an issue. What should affect your choice is how long you are staying, what you want to spend, and what you intend to do while you're there. Actual location is a factor as well; some accommodations may be positioned in places very inconvenient for getting around without a car, assuming you are traveling without one.

Apartments versus hotels: that can comedown to how comfortable you are without the support of a hotel desk for questions or to assist with problems, should any arise. As well, hotels can often store your luggage should you arrive before a check-in time, and/or be available for you should a transport snag have you arriving very late at night. Apartment hosts may have more stringent meet times for handing over keys and whatnot. Again, it's what your are or are not comfortable with, and what sort of extra support you wish to have at hand.

Editing to add: this forum is for reviews from travelers who've already been to Italy. You may get more responses if you post in "Destination Q and A" forum for Italy.

My adult daughter & I stayed in this apartment found on Booking.com. I liked that it was somewhat close to the main piazza in Amalfi, so we didn’t need to take our suitcase very far up the hill or up steep stairways.

Our efficient apartment in Amalfi, Arco della Rua, was nicely located over a formal restaurant, just past the archway over the main street. The furnishings were nice, including fun colorful bathroom tile design choices.

If you’re considering a hotel, check out the Villa Annalara in the town of Amalfi. Large, comfortable rooms, run by two dedicated brothers. Only about 10 rooms and it has a terrace with fantastic views over the town and the sea. You enter into a garden and walk through a tunnel to arrive at the elevator that takes you up to the hotel.

We have visited Amalfi town several times and enjoyed staying at the Hotel Floridiana. It is centrally located, small, locally owned, and has a delicious and generous breakfast served in a room fit for royalty.

They also offer wonderful tours for their guests guided by locals which seem perfect for someone traveling alone. They post a weekly schedule which could include Ravello, Path of the Gods, Valley of Fire.

Their website may seem outdated, but fear not they are ready for you! Just contact them directly. See info about their local tours by clicking on Facilities, then on Excursions and then on poster which shows the tours from 2022.
Happy travels.

Hmmmm. 2 nights will only give you one full day of sightseeing. That's not very much time as the Amalfi Coast is not the quickest, easiest region to get in and out of in the first place. Can I ask where you'll be coming from, where you'll be going to after the A.C. and what sorts of tours you have in mind? What sorts of things are you wishing to see/do?

cgg, because you are writing in "cell phone" short phrases, you have not provided as full a picture of your plans and wishes as most posters on this newsboard do. You may be missing or failing to get detailed information needed for an early "shoulder season" visit to a slightly hard-to-get-to place. For example, Amalfi is quite far (as public transit goes) from Rome. So you CANNOT wake up in Amalfi town and fly home from Rome that same day.

Your statement that you hadn't thought about the difference between Amalfi and Amalfi Coast suggests that you have not looked at Google Maps and studied some of the distances involved. Have you travelled in Italy or Europe before? It takes a lot more research to visit the Amalfi Coast effectively in a short time than it does to visit a major city like Paris or Berlin. See below:

It is also not an ideal location for group tours out of high season. Amalfi not even an ideal place to visit Pompeii from (did you even mention Pompeii?). It may be hard to find a room for April, because the dates are so close.

Right. To back up Tim, more information is needed to better help you.

As he wisely counseled, you do not want to be anywhere on the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento the morning of a flight out of Rome.
Sorrento might also be a better base for you than Amalfi. While not the Amalfi Coast, it's right next door and is a transport hub for the region, although there's no 'fast' rail service; just slower commuter train. You'd take a 'fast' train to Naples and switch to that commuter - the Circumvesuviana - at Garibaldi Station; it's attached to Napoli Centrale. It's an easy and cheap hop to Pompeii on that same train if that one is on your sightseeing list, and here's a resource for an inexpensive tour of the scavi ("Pompeii Walk')

If you have time, you could also take their "Amalfi coast Full day from Sorrento" tour.

Lots of info on on the Sorrento tourism site.

The clock is ticking on making hotel reservations! This is a popular area, and the amount of questions we're seeing on the forum for the upcoming season indicates that it's going to be a VERY busy one. Get onto www.booking.com and see what it's available for your dates and price range. Also be cautious to check exactly WHERE the accommodation is located; you don't want to be up in the hills if relying on public transit.

Thank you soo much for your input.
I am aware that it takes more time to return to Rome. I haven’t been to Europe in 12 years .
My trip is 10 days
Landing in rome 4/5
I’m spending 3 nights in rome 4/5 to 4/8
I plan to take the train to Naples
I have booked a hotel in sorrento for 2 nights 4/8 to 4/10 I hope to get to capri,
I was planning to go to amalfi for 2 nights >>>this is what I’m trying to figure out
I was reading taking a train in to amalfi and staying 3 nights 4/10-4/12, but it sounds like staying in sorrento is better option ??
On 4/13 I plan to take the day to return to rome
One night stay in rome before my return home on 4/14

You can get to the town of Amalfi which is a transportation hub in the middle of the Amalfi coast. You can take buses or ferries from there to most places you might want to visit such as Positano, Praiano and Ravello. Easy to get back to Rome by taking bus or ferry to Salerno and getting the train there to Rome. It’s a more direct route than getting from Amalfi to Sorrento to Naples to Rome.

There is no train in Amalfi or Positano.
