What to do in Messina / Sicily on 1 day stop from cruise?

I'm looking for ideas on what to do in Messina, Sicily on a 1 day cruise stop? I'm not interested in seeing the volcano, but more interested in culinary and vino suggestions? Walking tours? Do we need to rent a car to see sights? Or, taxi? Or just go to Taormina and walk around? Suggestions on restaurants? We love off the beaten path. Thanks!

I spent the night in Messina before a long bus trip (to Puglia) last year. The older part of town was OK for a wander but it didn't feel very special compared to many other places in Sicily. Given the geography, I'd suggest taking the train to Taormina-Giardini then the bus up from the station to the town itself. Both the train and the bus run frequently. Of course, you need to allow a lot of extra time on the trip back so you don't risk missing your ship.

Taormina may be mobbed with your fellow cruisers, but it's very pretty and the setting is exceptional. You can easily spend the day there. It's small and you won't need to take a tour. It's hilly, though.

I think you'll find enough in Taormina to keep you occupied the entire day, but if you don't, you can return early and spend some time in the historic district of Messina. I believe the cathedral is supposed to be very nice, but I didn't get there myself.

You posted your question in the "Review" section. This is primarily for reviews of hotels, restaurants, etc., in Italy. You probably would get better responses if you moved your question to the Italy section, under Destination Q & A. That is the appropriate place for your question.
