What to do? - have Half day after arriving at 7AM in Rome Airport (FCO) in September

Will end up in Umbria hotel at the end of the day, but want to make use of the time before that.

Will rent car to get Umbria, but would like to have a place to hold luggage before we pick up car, and perhaps visit a part of Rome outside the central area. (by train or bus or Uber or ??).

Umbria hotel is 2- hour drive from FCO. As long as we get there before dark...

Coming back to Rome for 3 days before leaving for US, so the central Rome things can be covered then.
Is there anything out by FCO worth seeing?

Other option of course is to depart FCO with car immediately and visit someplace along the way to Umbria.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ostia Antica is ~5 miles from FCO. Great place to wander around for a few hours before driving to your lodging

Yes, Ostia Antica is right there by FCO. We toured it when we were flying out of FCO, staying overnight at an airport hotel.

If you get the car right away, consider Tivoli or Orvieto.

Are you landing from the US? Or another location in Europe? Thinking of jet lag, exhaustion.

If you are alert enough to drive, Tivoli, Hadrian's Villa, Orvieto, maybe the beach??

Ostia Antica and Tivoli (Hadrian's Villa. Villa d'Este) are great ideas. Ostia takes a couple of hours and if it is summer, morning is the best time to go. Tivoli's Villa d'Este can be nice even on a hot day as it is higher in elevation and much is shady.

Pick up your car at FCO so you don't have to drive in Rome after a long flight (I drive in NYC, Chicago, & LA but would never drive in Rome). Your drive to Umbria will provide plenty of opportunities for beautiful countryside & lovely villages. And, you will be closer to your destination before you are totally exhausted from jet lag. Enjoy Italy!
