Village near Bergamo?

I'll be travelin' with Mom and girlfriend in Italy in early september. We have travelled together several times. Mom wants to stay in villages not cities. Hopefully with great restaurants and good transportation. We're thinking of visiting Bergamo and staying nearby in a village, since Bergamo looks fairly big. Any suggestions? Is Bergamo worth a trip?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott, while the total urban area of Bergamo is somewhat sizable, the fascinating Medieval section of Citta' Alta - high above the more modern Citta' Bassa area - is compact and absolutely worth spending time in. I wouldn't hesitate to book your accommodations there. It is particularly nice when it quiets down at night and you get a good feel for how it would have been to live there many centuries ago. The view from up there is also pretty darn nice!

Google up some photos?

Hi Kathy, thanks for your reply. We are still concerned that it is too big. Do you have a recommendation for a hotel there? Would it work if we visited Bergamo as a day trip from Lake Como? Are there other small villages in northern italy to recommend?

Sorry, no I don't have any other recommendations. I just don't think Citta' Alta is going to feel too big at all, and you'll have the added advantage of a good transport system for day trips around the region: we did Lake Como/Bellagio as a day trip from Bergamo.
