On my recent Village Italy trip, we had a stay at Villa Pambuffetti in Montefalco. I had the misfortune of having to stay in the Carriage House, room 14. The room was very poor and shabby, the carriage house sits 3 feet from a busy road with a street light right outside (even ear plugs did not help) and the curtains did not cover the window. There was black mold in the bathroom, and come to find out the day after we left, bed bugs in the lumpy mattress. Very disappointed. I hear the main villa was better - just don't let them put you in the carriage house.
Welcome to the forum!
I hope you mentioned this on your evaluation and actually I'd call to talk to someone in the tour office about the conditions.
We stayed at this hotel on our tour this spring. My understanding is that the variation in rooms is enormous— some people have fantastic rooms and others have really bad rooms. We were in the main house, in what we jokingly called “the maid’s room.” It was dark, and in dire need of updating and a good deep clean. This was our worst hotel experience in 3 RS tours.
But at least no one experienced bed bugs!
We had a spectacular dinner at l’Alchemista in Montefalco and the vistas were amazing, but there’s not much to see or do. If the hotel was really special, I could understand continuing to have the tour spend 2 nights In Montefalco, but that’s not the case and I honestly think it would be better for the tour to stay at a different hill town in the region (and, yes, I did mention this in my trip evaluation).
Thanks for the replies to my post about Villa Pambuffetti. I did put this feedback in my feedback form from my trip in October 2024 and did not hear anything back from RST. This place may have been better many years ago but needs to be removed from RST list. In a different room, my sister and brother-in-law had black mold in their bathroom and he woke with a swollen face due to mold. Told our tour guide land they did clean the bathroom, but, of course, black mold requires more than cleaning to remove. I lost 1/2 day at our next tour stop to wash and dry everything in my suitcase in hopes of not bringing bugs to other places. Seemed to work but that suitcase (one month back home) will live in my garage for at least one year - because I could not wash and dry it. The couple who run the villa openly argued in front of guests and really did seem very happy to be doing this.

I'd not expect them to contact me. As mentioned above, I would probably call and discuss with the tour department especially in view of Ruth's poor experience as well.
I'm sorry to hear this. We took this tour in 2017, and loved our room in Villa Pambuffetti.
Of course, any place can get bedbugs, but "very poor and shabby" and black mold are troubling. Definitely call or email the office. The folks there are very responsive.
I'm so sorry you had a horrible experience at this hotel. I stayed here on my Village Italy tour in September and had the most wonderful room. It's crazy how each hotel has good rooms and terrible rooms. Hopefully RS Tours will review this hotel and decide what to do. I really enjoyed the setting and wished we had more time to just relax there.
In 2018 we walked up the hill in the rain to the main villa to find out our room was in the carriage house next to where the bus dropped us off. The room was okay, but there was no hot water, and the room was very cold. The couple with the room on the top floor of the villa raved about their room. But we had a much shorter walk to town, and only those in the carriage house were able to be entertained by the marching band practicing across the street until 10 PM;)
Our worse room on any RS tour was on the same tour in Padua.
We stayed here also in October with the Village Italy tour. Our room was in the main house and was okay, the bed was fine. The Villa is very dated and musty but maybe that’s why the RS group uses it, creaky stairs and all? But there should not be mold, that’s not okay. Our breakfast buffet was very nice. Our problem there was lots of mosquitoes, horrible little creatures. It’s interesting that people have commented frequently on here in regards to this tour about how they don’t like the Padova hotel, which I agree is eclectic but our bed was good, but never complain about the hotel in Lucca. The bed and pillows were horrible, the blanket we needed from the closet because it had turned cold was dirty and there was more including hair clogged sink, broken shower stall door, broken toilet seat and yes, I listed all the complaints at the end of the tour. Maybe the office needs to send out the scouts on this tour’s hotels to reevaluate…..
We were at Villa Pambuffeti in the spring and stayed in the main villa. Our room was very pretty but not big. The grounds were lovely but there is not much to do in that town. I did not find the breakfast buffet that special since the owner was also selling a cookbook. Our hotel in Padova had a broken toilet seat twice and we gave up having them fix it again. There was barely enough room to move around. It was awful. The hotel in Lucca was great. We had a huge, huge lovely room. In Orvieto we were in the basement facing a wall. The RS tour was our first RS tour and I was surprised at how varied the hotels were. I am so disappointed you did not hear from Rick Steves about the bed bugs.
