Verona or Padua/base town for 3 nights or 4; Bologna? Where to explore for 1 week in April/May

I am going to Venice about 5 nights. After this, plan to explore the area nearby; have one week to explore at leisure level. I read about towns like Padua, Vicenza, Mantua, Sirmione (lake Garda) & Bozen. Explore some of these from base in Verona or Padua? Verona too many tourists? which is easier/nicer to use as base for 3-4 nights? Any recommendations or experience with any of these? Which are more special day trips? Also, I see Bologna is not too far (is it worth going in that direction) but it's not on train line from Venice to Milan. (Better to stay on train line?)
IT'S a ONE MONTH TRIP-- background information-----

Bigger picture: Have already travelled much of Italy, so will focus this trip on Milan/Venice/Lake Maggiore. We have ONE month total. Starting out in the Lake District (visiting friend at apartment on Lake Maggiore, in Verbenia, Piedmonte) for 1 week or 2. That leaves us with 2 weeks to travel beyond the lakes. Do you have any great ideas for places near Lake Maggiore to check out? Can take day trips to Lake Como's Varena, etc. or the like. We like to walk, discover magical places, find great cafes and food!

VENICE: FROM here we have reserved apartment for 5- 7 days in Venice. My interest is to spend the last week exploring area near the train ride between Venice and Milan. We fly home from Milan. Last year we spend one month traveling throughout Sicily on train/bus. It was amazing trip. Hoping to just have good time in this northern area --- trip. It will all be centered around the goal of exploring near my friend's apartment in Verbenia, Piedmonte, on Lake Maggiore.

HOTELS? any recommendation for budget friendly hotels or apartment (for 3; a couple plus one other person). We have an apartment in Venice but no other yet in Padua or Verona, or in Milan or Bologna. Hotel or even airbnb. Thank you! It will be April 16--May 13.

We did a short trip to Verona (3 nights), Ravenna (2 nights) and Bologna (1 night, really just a transit stop) following our trip to Sicily. We went to Padua for a day trip from Verona. Our return from Padua was delayed due to train issues. We arrived around 9pm. Should have taken a cab back to our hotel but we walked and I found the walk a little creepy. I think that Padua is a little far for a day trip (we could have used more time there, it was a long day as it was).

We were there in early November. Verona was busy then, but not overly busy.

Have you been to Ravenna? I would put it high are your list — nice town, truly unique sites. We had 1-1/2 days there. Could have spent 2 full days, easily.

Thank you! So helpful!! Sounds like all 3 are worthy of overnight stays. I will prioritize Ravenna. Did you love Verona or Padua more.? Sounds like Verona was good at that time. ( April may be similar time). I am one that likes to explore and relax, enjoy local pace. I just pick a few and enjoy them. Of these 3 , what order of 💓. Would they follow? Favorite? Ravenna for overnight?

We spent 3 nights in Verona so got to know it much better. We were only in Padua for the day. If I did it over I might spend 2 nights in Verona and 2 nights in Padua and 3 in Ravenna (that would change my trip from 6 nights to 7 plus
A night in Bologna to get home in one day. Sometimes you have to cut to fit the time you have, which is never enough)

LetiCalifornia, I am looking at the same area.

I think that the beauty of Bologna is you can stay there the entire time and take easy day trips to Padua, Ravenna, Modena, Parma, and even Milan. I think the difficult part is finding accommodations in Bologna. I just can't seem to find much (but I want to stay a long stay so it's a bit more difficult perhaps).

It is so difficult to decide where to base, isn't it?

All changed and now we will be travelling from Venice to Bari, in Puglia. Going to spend a week exploring the south. Staying in two places— Locorotunda and Lecce. Thank you so much for all the information. We were lead to the south by friends who live in the north.

Any recommendations on Padua budget hotels for a 2-night stay with daily trips to Venice for Biennale? Many thanks.

It was a while ago but we enjoyed our stay of several days at the Hotel El Cason in Padua. It is an easy, short walk to the train station and so convenient for traveling out of Padua for day trips We were treated with great kindness and generosity by the owners during our stay. A restaurant is on site, breakfast was quite nice. Outdoor patio seating for a drink or a sit. The room was spacious and the bathroom large. The hotel is neither posh nor “charming” but I rank it among best stays ever for the warmth and kindness with which we were treated. Safe travels.
