I am writing a brief review for a place we have not stayed in, but I think it is worthy of recommendation based on my experience in booking and then needing to cancel. So keep in mind that we did not actually stay there,
Our family trip to Switzerland and Italy in September originally included a single night in Verona, basically a stopover on our way between Luzern and the Dolomites. We needed 3 rooms for our family of 8, and we wanted to be within easy walking distance of the train station.
Last September we spent one night at Grand Hotel des Arts in Verona on our way to the Dolomites, and liked the location very much for the convenience, right on the main street (Corso Porta Nuova) between the train station and the Arena. Outside the city walls, but a short walk to them and Piazza Bra. But that hotel was booked. So I looked nearby, and found Pepita Lodge, with 3 nice modern rooms to accommodate our family.
This is not a standard hotel; there is no reception desk. The manager, Roberto, will meet you on arrival and is available after that by text if you need anything. So it is more like staying in an independent apartment or studio. We stayed in a number of places like this on our trip last March and it was always fine.
But yesterday I had to cancel our reservation there due to a change in our plans. The main reason I am taking the time to write this “review” is that Roberto was so kind and helpful during the booking process. Also I think the location is great for someone who wants to walk from the train station and doesn’t feel the need to be “inside the city walls”. And it gets excellent reviews on booking.com.
I know that lodging can be scarce and expensive in Verona during opera season. But this place looks like a good alternative to a pricy hotel inside the walls. You can book directly on their website (which my iPad says is not secure) or on booking.com.
