I will be in Venice in May - has anyone stayed at Pensione Guerrato in the last few months? How was your experience? There are some wildly mixed reviews online from a few sources, so wondering about recent stays. Thanks!
We stayed there on a RS tour, no elevator - we had to carry luggage up 6 flights of stairs. The breakfast was not so good for Europe standards.
Haven't stayed there in several years, but if you do stay there, let us know. We can tell you about a short cut to get to the hotel that will save a lot of walking with the luggage.
We will be staying there for a RS tour and our pre trip accommodations will be sub-standard I am told so any shortcuts would be appreciated.
jimsandi,
At the airport you can get a vaporetto pass for various periods, and you can add a one way bus fare to the vaporetto pass. There is a good site maintained by the ACTV system that has current prices and such. Can't remember the url so just google it. There is also a site named veniceforvisitors.com that has a lot of good information.
Take the # 5 ACTV bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma. Be sure and validate the vaporetto pass on the bus. Do not wait until you get on the vaporetto. Also, validate the pass each time you use the vaporetto. Of course you could also take a regular land taxi to P. Roma.
At any rate, take the # 1 vaporetto and get off at the Mercato (or Rialto Mercato) stop. It will be on the "right" side of the canal and is the stop after Ca' d Oro which is on the "left" side of the canal. Do not go all the way to Rialto Bridge -- you will have cross over the bridge an have a much longer walk to the hotel.
When you get off the vaporetto at the Mercato stop, walk straight ahead through the arched doorway. There will be a small plaza slightly to your left and right. Turn right and walk straight. If there are a lot of vendors in the walking area, be sure they are all on your right side and buildings are on your left so you do not miss the next turn. Just before you get to the place where a building juts out in front of you, turn left on a small street named Calle drio la Scimia and look for the hotel sign up and on the left.
If you arrive by train: When you exit the main entrance look for the yellow vaporetto dock and follow the directions above.
If you go to bing.com or Google Maps you can get very good aerial photos of the P Roma and train station area and vaporetto stop locations there and at Mercato. At google maps you may also be able to get street views and walk the route to the hotel from the vaporetto stop.
Hope this helps.
While our experience at this hotel doesn't meet your "last few months" timeline, we did stay there in October, 2023. It was the Rick Steves VFR Tour hotel. We loved it: the location was great (two left turns after exiting the hotel and you're looking at the Rialto Bridge), the staff were very helpful and accommodating, and our room was very comfortable. We were on the first floor, so the lack of an elevator wasn't an issue. I'm not a breakfast person, so I can't really speak to the quality of hotel breakfasts in general or this one specifically. The hotel has been a mainstay for years for the Venice stop for his tours, which, hopefully, speaks volumes.
