Any suggestions for lodging within walking distance to S.Giovanni train station. Varenna? At first considered one night, but after viewing photos of the area realized we better stay two nights. Taking train from Florence/Milan. Would love to have a view of the Lake of course, but want to keep the cost around $150. We will be taking the direct train to Lucerne from there.

Check out Airbnb. I stayed in a place called Ca Mia in Perledo, but it is a bit of a hike from the train station. My room was only $30 a night and included breakfast.

In Varenna, we stayed at the Albergo Milano and loved it. It's a smaller, family run hotel. There is a wonderful terrace there, for enjoying a lake view while you drink and dine. It's less than a 10 min. walk to Varenna's train station. (But the train station you mention, S. Giovanni, is in Como.) You might get a room at Albergo Milano within your stated budget, depending on when you plan to travel. A room with a balcony over the lake, during high season, has a current rate of 195 Euro, while a room with a side view of the lake, during low season, is currently 115 Euro.
