Swimming in Tuscany and the Lake District in May

We will be visiting Tuscany during the first two weeks of May and Lake Como the following week: we're wondering whether to expect to swim in the outdoor pools we see advertised, or in Lake Como. Although we suspect pools are unheated and Lago di Como will still be really cold, we dream of being able to take a dip. Any swimmers with local knowledge?

To answer your question, most people would not. We were in Lake Como last August and while it was swimmable, it still was not warm. We had originally planned to go in May 2020 and my son was planning to bring a wet suit to swim. Average temperature in May according to internet is about 60 degrees.

Now I am a Florida wimp so you might feel differently.

I've never found any lakes in The Alps to be comfortable for swimming--even in the middle of the Summer.

I've therefore just been satisfied with the incredible scenery around Lake Como and Lake Lugano. I can swim in my pool upon return home.

Most lakes, including Como, are perfect for swimming from July onwards with temperatures in the vicinity of 24-25C, but the first half of May will be brisk.
The water is never Florida-warm...but then, where is?

Water temps will probably be in the 60’s, so unless the air temp is over 90, that’s probably going to feel VERY cold. You’ll definitely be awake after that dip! Just be careful of jumping in and being shocked. I live in an area with lakes and rivers that are fed by snowmelt from nearby mountains, and (usually drunk) people drown after the shock of jumping into that COLD water.

Thank you all for your responses about swimming in Tuscany and the Lake District in May. We're familiar with 60 degree waters near home and, on your advice, we'll leave our bathing suits at home!

Four trips to Lake Como and rarely have seen anyone swimming in the lake.
