Can anyone recommend a safe clean inexpensive hotel in Florence?

What is "inexpensive" to you ? We have stayed twice at Hotel Dali (RS recommended) in bath-down-the-hall facilities, no breakfast but yes on elevator, laundromat one block away.

Hotel Smeraldo, right across the river on Ponte Vecchio. Adjacent to Boboli Gardens and Pitti Palace. We easily walked to all the sights and the train station to depart. The staff there will tell you where they go to eat and get the best gelato. I think they still have a live chat on their website. Sarah and Sylvia were two that were most helpful.

To George, I think you mean Hotel la Scaletta?
Hotel la Scaletta is one of our favorites and Sylvia and Sarah are both so delightful and helpful. Love the view of the Boboli Gardens from the roof-top terraces which is also a great place for dinner. The hotel is part of a 14th century mansion so no two rooms are alike. Hope you can stay there, gfranco!

Again, how do you define "inexpensive" -- I compared Dali and La Scaletta for the same 3 days in June and prices were €210 and €468. All depends on what you want.

We have stayed twice at Sanctuary B&B Firenze, which is a convent 4 blocks south of the Duomo. The rooms are clean, quiet and not noisy and there is an interior garden that is very large. If you get a room facing it, there is no noise at all. The rooms are about 100 E/night and includes very basic breakfast (coffee, bread, fruit).

Alberto Bencidormi on Via Faenza near SMN train station. Have stayed there 3 times, it runs $75-$95 depending on the exchange rate. Host is friendly and gracious, rooms are basic and clean. Guests may use the shared kitchen.
