Sicily over Palm Sunday and Easter

We are considering a trip to Sicily and would likely be there for several weeks, including over the week of Palm Sunday and Easter. We're concerned about crowds, tourist site closures, and reduced public transportation during this holiday period. Advice?

By researching sites in which you are interested in visiting, you should be able to determine closures. I think being in Sicily over Holy Week will give you a unique opportunity to observe and participate in various celebrations, solemn observances and parades. You might want to contact Tourist Information or check town websites to learn if anything is planned in which you might be interested. Asking the staff of your lodgings is also a great resource. I’ve visited Sicily twice, never during Holy Week, and I’m jealous!

Trapani has 24 hours of Good Friday parades, etc. It is a very old tradition.

I have friends who were in Sicily over Easter. They were in Enna where they enjoyed a fabulous Good Friday parade. The only issue is there was nowhere to stay available so they drove at night to Palermo. They lived to tell the tale but would not recommend.

I think from their account it would be important to figure out accommodations early.

We were in a smaller town (Caltagirone) in Sicily over Easter one year. Our biggest surprise was that Easter Monday is also a holiday in Italy and there was virtually no public transportation that day to get us out of town. So we stayed an extra night! Fortunately, that was the year we weren't on a schedule.

In Sicily there's little, if any, inter-city bus service on Sundays. The Monday holiday may well mean the Sunday schedule is used, so little or no public transportation running then, either.
