Rome with a pool

We are planing a trip to Rome for several days in mid July 2023. Family group of 11 and five are children….ages range 6-12. It will be quite hot but it’s necessary vaca time for for kids in school. It seems to help if there is a pool and of course A/C. Is it possible to find hotel with pool in a pleasant area within walking distance to the many sites.

Booking.com will allow you to select "Swimming pool" (under Amenities) as a filter, then click on "Show on map" to see where the hotels with pools are located. Although there aren't a lot of hotels with pools in central Rome, there are some. I've found booking.com's reviews useful, because you cannot leave a review if you haven't actually stayed at the property.

You don't have to make your reservation through booking.com, and in your case I certainly would not do so without also checking the website of the hotel itself, since you need multiple rooms (three? four? five?). You may get a better deal by working directly with the hotel. In addition, I believe it's common for hotels to list only some of their rooms through websites like booking.com, so the results may not include some viable hotels because booking.com doesn't have the right number and type of rooms for you.

It's also possible that some hotels don't have their 2022 rates set, which might mean their inventory isn't listed yet on booking.com.

A quick look at booking.com, displayed 55 hotels with a pool, in Rome

Do use the map view to see where they are. Many seemed to be outside the 'tourist core'

As mentioned, the Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, has an incredible pool - probably the best in the city. We used to get "daily passes" years ago to visit. But you're not near the center when you stay here.

The Villa Agrippina Gran Meliá, near the Vatican, has a large pool. The Palazzo Dama (near Piazza del Popolo) and Aldrovandi Villa Borghese (wonderful pool) are not too far out. The Hotel Parco dei Principi, on the backside of Villa Borghese, has a large pool with views of the park. The Aleph Rome hotel has a rooftop pool. The Mercure Roma Centro Colosseo has a rooftop pool with views of the Colosseo, just 400 meters away!

Thank you all much! A pool is the “carrot to dangle” …old saying…for grandkids who will complain how hot they are and drag along. They do want to go, see and experience these sights…but I know them very well! I checked booking.com. That really helps acraven. And rnr…that all definaly helps also! The Mercure Roma Centro really peaks my interest!! We always prefer staying in more local inns….not chain hotels. I will definitely look into this more when they can provide dates for 2023. Just glad to hear there are a few options for what I am hoping for!

Pools probably will only be available at 5 star locations and will be priced accordingly. Hotels and pools are not as common as in the US and especially if trying to be near the central core of the city. Some of the buildings were built before the idea of pool was considered. Good luck.

A few years ago we stayed at Rome Cavalieri. It is a Waldorf Astoria property and as mentioned above the main outdoor pool is quite nice -- very deep though. There is a children's pool. We stayed here to "lure" my son into going out in the mornings to the "boring" stuff with the promise of outdoor pool afternoons. The thing is though that it is not within walking distance of anything or maybe I should say not within walking distance of any place we had on our list. They did have a shuttle but mostly we took taxis. We loved the hotel. You are very wise to want a pool and A/C -- I've been to Rome 5 times, sadly all five times have been in July or August and I must have bad luck because the heat was awful and that is from a person who loves warm weather.

Please carefully check reviews of the Mercure property that piqued your interest.. The location is good and it has a pool and that is that.

Just be aware that the Mercure brand is one of the many, like Novotel, Sofitel, Ibis, and many more, brands of the huge Accor chain - the biggest in the world.

Mercures all have individual personality, and fit generally at a similar level as a high level Novotel and well under a Sofitel. Because they have individual personality they can vary up and down in quality and service. It is well worth reading reviews on specific properties.

Later Edit: According to Wikipedia Accor is only the 6th largest worldwide, but is the largest in Europe.

According to the same article these are the hospitality brands of Accor:

Accor operates in 5,199 locations in over 110 countries with a total capacity is approximately 762,000 rooms. It owns and operates brands in many segments of hospitality: Luxury (Raffles, Fairmont, Sofitel), premium (MGallery, Pullman, Swissôtel), midscale (Novotel, Mercure, Adagio), and economy (ibis, hotelF1). Accor also owns companies specialized in digital hospitality and event organization, such as onefinestay, D-Edge, ResDiary, John Paul, Potel & Chabot and Wojo.

Thanks Nigel. I should have known. Many larger hotels in Rome likely are part of a chain….As other larger cities! I appreciate your explanation. Always prefer being informed.

We stayed at Parco dei Principi on one of our trips to Rome and it has a nice swimming pool. Location is above Borghese Gallery.
